Well a few days ago my transmission experienced total failure. Ill get to specifics in a few but first a back story. This spring I noticed the turbo more at low speeds right before shift points, maybe it was the first time having the windows down in a while or the new intercooler pipes, I ignored it. Last week I noticed a weird prolonged woosh noise at the 3-5 or 3-4 shift. I could replicate it every time. I assumed I was having an issue and ordered new fluid and a ppg pan. My plan was to service the trans today and check everything out. Well that didn't happen.

Last Wednesday I pulled out into traffic and it went from 1-N-10-N-1 in a very fast order. I floored it at one point in that process because I almost got hit by a semi. A 5K neutral drop happened and it defaultwd to 7th. Which so happens to he a failsafe gear, 4th pr 7th. Towed it home and checked the fluid, it was black, completely black zero hint of red. And a piece of friction material was on the stick, off to Ford with a $5800 estimate for full replacement.

Called ford corporate told them my story, emphasis on semi almost killing me. Explained I have owned 6 fords, 3 brand new, 4 were trucks. Logged over 1m miles behind the wheel and only lost 2 transmissions. Both of those were north of 150k and abused. Found out yesterday they told the dealer to treat it as a warranty claim.

Spoke with trans tech who corrected me and stated he was thr transmission guy, got a laugh out of it. I told him it sounds like the CDF drum, he confirmed that same diagnosis the next day. New trans is in, just waiting on big blue to answer on payment. Service writer said I am at minimum not paying for parts, but they probably will cover everything including my rental.

Sucks but the CDF drum was revised for mid 22 and newer 10 speeds. If ford covers it that means something to me. If not, well im selling it and getting something with the 6r80.

Wow Derek. It sounds like they’ll take care of you - I sure hope it all works out that way.

That sure was a fast turnaround by the dealer!

Bummer Derek, had to be a nervous moment with a semi bearing down on you.

Hope to hear Ford really stepped up for you.
After I got the quote I actually wish it hit me, like gently as to not cause bodily harm but to total out the truck.

Hopefully Ford really comes through. I always hear those stories never thought I would be on the receiving end. The dealership and tech both said 30k drain and fill intervals are required for these. Fluid breaks down otherwise. I think ill start that for cheap insurance. They said this after I said I would do it myself. So I dont believe they wrte trying to sell me anything.

Agreed I thought I was going to be on the 2-3 month backorder nonsense.

Thanks. My 2021 with 28K shifts fine. Not perfect.

be careful what you say.....I said the same thing about my 2021 Lariat Tremor and absolutely loved it til it started having trans issues at 31,000 miles......traded it in after the dealer did the valve body temp fix under the TSB...it worked great for a very short time...then went back to crappy shifts!....I got $31K for it and the dealer that bought it started it off at $35,995 and now it's sold as of last night at a listed price of $34,300......so I'm thinking I sold it at the right time before used cars drop too much.......and got a great deal on a new Ranger Raptor!

These trannys have issues and Ford knows it!!......The TSB spells it out and Ford should issue a recall!.....I'm glad I got rid of that thing and not have to fight Ford to fix it the right way

Yeh I am hoping they follow through and cover it outside of warranty. Clearly a faulty part. Mine shifted great too other than the occasional clunkiness and confusion. However people who traded to newer or had the updated cdf drum installed, say the trans shifts better than ever. Pretty sure we all are drinking the koolaid thinking it will be fine.

for the record I thought the same thing when Sids crapped out. Sorry Sid but I thought it will never happen to me….

Anyone have an idea what a dealership charges for a drop and fill and filter change?
Its not cheap. Mine was over $200. Pretty simple procedure yourself. Just get a nice pump to drain it.
