I've been retired since 08. prior to that as an ase certified master auto tech the shop I was at used the BG trans flush machine. I've never seen a problem using that and will probably go to the shop I used to work for and have that done every 30k if I don't find a verified reason not too. And someone's word is not enough to sway me either. To many fear mongers on the internet to not search out verifiable info. So if you have a verified publication that can verify flushing properly is unacceptable then present it.

That little amount is considered normal. Really just basic wear in/break in metal. The magnet is there help keep it from gojng back in the transmission

My 2021 Ranger now has 20,500 miles on it. No noticeable problems with the transmission, but want to stay off any so planned to have fluid changed at 20,000.
So which are you all having done, a Flush or just Fluid Change? Also, what is the name of that stuff you all recommend adding .... Lubragard or something sounded like that?

I understand that just a "Fluid Change" doesn't drain all the existing fluid.
It's time for me to make my appointment to take it in for its 5,000 mile oil change & 20,000 miles servicing so want to get it done at the same time.

I would think you would want to get most if not all the factory fluid out. So a flush. I did mine around 55k and plan on a pan drop and filter change at minimum around 75 or 80k.
Lubegard Platinum is the product you want. The gray bottle, not red.

Do you think I'm being ridiculously cautious having it done now at 20,500 miles? Maybe wait until 30,000 for a flush? I asked the service counter guy about cost last time I was at the Ford dealer and off the top of his head, he told me around $400.

I did a fluid change, flushed the old stuff out, changed the filter, and did the differential fluid at 50k miles. Cost me about $1k for the dealership to do.

FYI: Just had a flush on one of my cars at 84K miles. Labor $359, 20 quarts of trans fluid $425... I looked and getting the correct fluid the best I could do was $23 per quart.

So a proper flush is pricy.

If you are not having any symptoms, it might be early. But it seems to be beneficial regardless. If you put it off, I would still add the Lubegard.

Now I'm wondering if he was giving me an estimated price on just a fluid change. Will have to call next week and inquire when I make my appt for the oil change and 20,000 miles service.

He probably did. I paid around $400 for the flush alone.

Is adding the Lubegard something I can do myself? I know my old Mountaineer has a fill spout where I check transmission fluid under the hood... never looked to see if the Ranger has one under the hood. I know there are women out there who are not mechanically challenged, but other than checking wiper fluid, oil level, tire air pressure, and detailing my truck... that's my extent.

Ah, no. The first thing you need to do is buy a Fitzstick. It is a true replacement dipstick for the tiny thing they put on the Rangers at the factory. It is well worth the money and is essential for keeping tabs on fluid level.

Oh I know the $400 didn't include the oil change or any other service. I'm wondering if the around $400 estimate was for just a "fluid change" vs. a "fluid flush".
