I just got back from a 1,900-mile Canadian fishing trip pulling a small U haul 5x8 single axle trailer. No brakes on this trailer. Mileage was about 18 until we started high tailing it home since we do the home trip in a single day. 16 hrs. drive time. No issues with the truck or trailer.

Saw this lil guy swimming from an island to the mainland:

I pulled my car to Dearborn MI earlier this summer and in the mountains of TN last summer for car meets. The car hauler has the surge brakes, so I turned off the adaptive cruise & auto braking features with that as I don't have a trailer controller. Total weight was maybe 5,800 lbs. and truck pulled strong, though could feel the trailer a lot more than the small box I just pulled.

Don't leave us hanging, how was the fishing trip?

Ah, that would be the difference. I'm not into Jeeps, and I hate the one we have.
I bought a brand new 2017 JK and ended up hating it.

I love this TJ.

Absolutely.

One Fiat Jeep was more than enough Fiat Jeeps.

A nice benefit is that the group of TJ guys I now wheel with are some of the greatest folks I know.

And we DON'T do DUCKS ?

No ducking way!!! My wife got ducked while working. Sadly, no real RHD options in the US for new other than the Fiat Jeeps for private buyers. I keep feeding Ford reminders that their Transits have RHD options in the UK and that it should not be too hard to bring that in to the US, but so far, I've seen nothing.

Yep, these trucks are awesome.
Towed 7600lbs, overweight i know, with 1k tounge weight, 12600 gcvwr. I used a cat scale. With tbc this tow was easy peasy. 400 miles. Only concern where some of the winding hills going down near ft. Hood.
Turned the gain up and drove down slowly. My uncle was impressed with the ranger compared to his 2004 extended cab 6 foot bed 5 speed f150.

Do all uhaul trailers have surge brakes?
I think all the trailers that have double axles do. I have rented a car dolly (no brakes), car hauler like pictured (had brakes), 5x8 (no brakes), 8x10 (brakes) and a utility trailer with two axles that also had brakes. This is over the last decade btw.

@Buckbull...trying not to hijack thread, but it was Canada, so fishing was good. It's a unique camp, drive forever, a boat picks you, portage to the camp on the other side. Only camp on the lake and it's in a CA Provincial Park. You've to bring 100% of food, etc, but comforts of a nice cottage, hot showers, regular plumping etc. The dock hands clean the fish, owner has a fry house and cooks the catch. Walleye 3x in a week was good. :) Mostly walleye, tho lake is getting good on Smallies. Some snakes too. I had 19" small mouth, 20-3/4 was our groups best; 34+/- Northern, only a 26 walleye for the group. It's a very active lake, some days better than others, but overall, a great time. Not too big of a fisherman, but great getaway for a week with family and friends and tons cheaper than a fly in.

This video kind of sums up the place. BIL's family started going in early/mid 2000's and then skipped until 2012. Have been about 8 times with them since then. We had 10 in our group with 2 cabins this time, one cabin has 3 sets of bunks beds. It was a conservation lake until 2016 with all walleyes catch & release, now 2 fish limit, 17-3/4" max slot (good eaters). Manitoba still requires barbless (or pinched) hooks. There are still two other smaller portage lakes (Saddle & Side Saddle) from the main lake. One guy in camp had 42" pike on one of those the week I was there. You had to do the portage lakes before 2016 to keep walleye, though the portage lakes were (and still are IIRC) 4 per man. We didn't count, but ~40 in a day session is a good day by me. We went to northern MN (Kabetogama lake) during covid with border closed and the fishing sucked by comparison!

Enough on fishing, carry on with the towing discussion. :fistbump:

I'll ask, what was the reason for disabling those? Even if you had the brake controller it would not have mattered since the U-Haul has the surge brakes. I would think adaptive cruise and such would be fine with surge brakes since they work regardless of why the truck is slowing down.
If you have the OEM towing package with the tow mode switch, it turns them both off when engaged.

Do all uhaul trailers have surge brakes?
I think all the larger ones do (probably Federally mandated).

From U-Haul:

6x12 Cargo Trailer, 6x12 Utility Trailer, 6x12 Open with a Ramp trailer, most of our Tow Dollies and all of our Auto Transports

Even without the tow package it should have a tow/haul button, I think. But, that is incorrect. I use adaptive cruise all the time while towing, mine has factory tow package and the dealer installed EBC.
