That's right... I have the Ford Brake Controller kit that is/was available from Ford in the Accessory catalog. I am hearing it is no longer available from them ??? It was really the way to go, as it had not just the Redarc controller..but all the wiring and modules to hook into the existing underdash wiring and the Third Brake Light, which is where they recommend to use as a source for brake input signal. The part number is VKB3Z-2C006-A. Maybe there are some sources still out there where it can be found.

Be careful! What is on the Redarc site is for the ROW Rangers and is not the same as the Ford kit for the NA Rangers.

You are correct. If on the NA RedArc site, they do not show a kit for the Ranger. They do show a kit for the Bronco and other Ford models though!

My opinion the factory ford setup (which involves tearing up the headliner and such to get to the 3rd brake light) is too much trouble and wasn't available when I was looking for a controller for my 23 XL. I ended up buying the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty off amazon for $135 and posted pics of the installation under my name with pics. It works great and fairly easy install.

OK, let's have a link of what you got from the Redarc site. And did it tie into the CHMSL?

10-4 on that one !!! It was a pain in the ass tearing up all the garnish moldings...undoing and semi-dropping the headliner... and then dealing with those stupid "connectors" that came with the kit, which fell apart almost immediately, and I had to hard wire everything together instead. And....not to mention that the directions that came with the kit were next to useless. But...enough complaining... it did all go back together fine and is working quite well. I like the variable input on the controller which adjusts the braking to current road conditions. As an aside...I decided to install it myself as my dealer quoted me $600.00 to install it !!! I think they just didn't want to get invioled with it !!

My dealer said mine would the the only one they ever do, but they set the price and included it in the invoice with the truck sale. Tech even tried getting out of doing it by saying my Ranger didn't include the wiring to support the brake controller, I pointed out that it has the tow package and having those wires are part of that package. I was waiting and working from the lobby and when the advisor said that I locked my computer and said, lets go look for that wire, amazingly when I got out to the garage and was looking over the instruction real quick before looking for myself, the tech found the wires. Had I not been a waiter, it would have been out of the garage without the work getting done. Then the tech proceeded to break several clips removing the interior. I found out when I when to pull those panels later to run power to the back for the GMRS radio and other toys in the back.

Tearing up the headliner is not required in any way shape or form. Yes you do have to pull down the
back edge so that you can fish the wires to 3rd brake light out to put the supplied harness in series with the light.

As long as you are willing to take the risk that the trucks emergency braking system could slam on the truck brakes without applying the trailer
brakes any brake controller will do the job.
