Didn't want to mention names for fear that people would get panties in a bunch but, not even those companies. The company I was referring to was Coob. The number of people rushing to tune, and them being the first to release a tune... There were a lot of pushed limits and blown engines.
Blaming COBB for blown FoST engines is not the right path to go down.

They are probably the most established tuner in the American FI market.

I've been around Subie's for 2 decades, my FiST for almost half a decade, I've not once heard of COBB OTS tunes causing issues. A COBB protune by Jimmy down the street, yes.
In all fairness, I put 100K on a focus ST running "COOB" tunes exclusively. I didn't even buy any of their parts. Mine was a 2013 that I got in 2012 and tuned it probably 6 months after that, so I was really early "beta" tester for their tunes :)

I think a whole bunch of hot dog kids bought the ST and drove it like they would their NA 150K mile honda civic and things went "boom".

I'd still have the ST if it didn't become a hood ornament for an Olds88.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This all day.

I WISH COBB would make a AP for our Rangers. As I've got a great protuner locally and custom tune is much better than an OTS option.

BTW, emailed asking them, no current plans.

My custom vs OTS comments led to a thought.

@Project Midnight

5 star does datalogging tuning via email correct?

Did you add the downpipe after your initial tune? Did you send logs to 5 Star to adjust the tune for the DP? Does their warranty mention anything about having to send in logs after mods?

My previous comments reminded me of the number of problems major changes that aren't tuned for can cause.

Had no trouble with the Cobb tune in my Forester for 6 years.

Agree, had no trouble with the Cobb tune in my Forester for 6 years and had their CAI.

I also would love to see COBB make a tune for our trucks. I’ve had their tunes on subies and my Mazdaspeed 3 with a pro tune and that thing was a beast. Just finished a full COBB install with full exhaust I/c, intake and tune on my buddy’s eb mustang. If they did offer a tune for our trucks I would for sure get it but all that said I went with FPP for the warranty no matter if they will honor it or not. I think it’s just a little peace of mind addition for me. I’m sure if I had a catastrophic failure the claim would be denied but it still makes me feel a little better knowing there may be a chance lol.

I emailed them about a week ago and a guy named Chan replied the same "no current plans" for me as well. Too bad! You'd think theyd have some knowledge on them at this point.

I think the Ranger is just too small of a market for them. It seems like it'd be easy enough, though. They already make APs for several Fords, and tune the 2.3 in at least 3 other Ford applications.

I feel the same way. If they can do one for a 2.3EB crate engine, I feel like the Ranger wouldn't be a problem but what do I know about computers.

Crate, EB Mustang, and FoRS, every 2.3 EB application except Ranger and Explorer IIRC.

When I bought the 3” down pipe through 5 Star, they sent me a new file to upload for the new mod... part of the warranty was that you had to buy only parts that they offered, and then they would send you a new tune “file” to upload for the parts you have installed... That is a good question though, about the data logging... they never asked for any... I wasn’t trying to max it out as much as I could, or anything... Same way on all APR tunes on my VW’s... so I think they were just sending me “generic” tunes for the parts I had... In all honesty, I don’t think it was the tune, I never had pinging/detonation noises etc..... The truck ran flawlessly for almost 15,000 miles after the tune... It just started knocking real loud, and the low oil pressure light came on.... I personally believe that something went wrong with the oil pump or something... First thing Ford asked was “did you have a “check engine” light? Never had one.... This is why I’m waiting on Ford before I contact 5 Star... If Ford blames the tune, then I’m going to request the data that shows it, then present that to 5 Star...

Good to know.

IMHO regardless of whether you are trying to get to max numbers or not if a company offers datalogging tweaks I'd do it.

For tunes...

Datalogging to me is more about insuring the safety of the tune, or resolving issues, than getting more power. More power is nice, but not if you are on the edge so far that one tank of bad gas could cause havoc.

I believe this was a mechanical failure and not tune related just from what the OP has said in is account of what happened. I hope this works out for him.

I really think cobb is missing the boat here. They would sell like hotcakes for the ranger, I think. Like you said, it's not like it's a brand new motor. They should be able to whip up tunes with very little effort / money involved.

I wish they'd drop a line in here and I agree. There are so many possibilities with the AP that don't exist in the other devices for the ranger. Unless I'm missing something and there's some sort of romraider already out there but that gets complicated.

We should just keep emailing them and maybe they'll listen.
