Way out of bounds... That is a pay to play scenario if I ever saw one in regard to the mods made. Again, from a guy that tuned his RS and knew the risks I was taking. I can tell you that there are reputable companies that will tune, and there are ones that will tell you that you are good to go that are pushing the limits. I can't tell you how many people blew up their Focus ST's when they came out because a certain tuner literally blew it!

I'm assuming you're referring to DHM exclusively , that or SSI... But yeah, they put more than their fair share of 2.0 ecoboosts into the graveyard.

Didn't want to mention names for fear that people would get panties in a bunch but, not even those companies. The company I was referring to was Coob. The number of people rushing to tune, and them being the first to release a tune... There were a lot of pushed limits and blown engines.

In all fairness, I put 100K on a focus ST running "COOB" tunes exclusively. I didn't even buy any of their parts. Mine was a 2013 that I got in 2012 and tuned it probably 6 months after that, so I was really early "beta" tester for their tunes

I think a whole bunch of hot dog kids bought the ST and drove it like they would their NA 150K mile honda civic and things went "boom".

I'd still have the ST if it didn't become a hood ornament for an Olds88.

The biggest variable is the driving habits of the person behind the steering wheel.

Does anybody know if Ford can gather historical data in regard to Engine RPM's, wheel speed, engine temperature, oil pressure, transmission temperature, etc. by downloading data from the truck? Not just recent, but over a long period of time?

Not sure about the trucks computer but Ford pass may.
I know my Colorado could tell me in the app my driving habits and how many times I stepped on the gas to hard or hard breaking, average speed etc. I think the Toyota app does it too. I know allot of debate on it was about what insurance companies would do if they could get their hands on the data. I have never seen it in the Ford App like on my Colorado but it does not mean Ford may not be logging the data. I mean that is the push to have vehicles online to log data and sell it.

That "start/stop" data is coming from the G sensors in your phone, notice how you have an option for it when you're not in your vehicle too?

FordPass doesn't get any specific data that doesn't come from the computer in the truck, which to the best of my knowledge, outside of CELs/Codes, has no long-term data storage/logging.

I guarantee the truck knows where you're at, when you go there, how fast you drove there, and what you ate for breakfast. CEL's and whatnot are not personally identifiable data, so there would be no need to opt out of anything, and they couldn't sell "This truck had a CEL on tuesday" to anyone for enough to pay ATT for the cell connection. Follow the money...

If all else fails you may get lucky calling your insurance agent. Many years ago I was working in a shop and our customer got his carrier to foot the bill less deductible for a new motor on his Fiat 124 Spider convertible. From what I recall he said he went thru a 'puddle' and engine seized like a drum.

Maybe start a Go-Fund-Me page. A lot was learned in the previous 315 entries to this thread, I bet there are a lot of generous folks in our forum. Might as well find out exactly how generous!


Here is a crazy thought, let Jesse and his marry and of misfits, parolees and semi-skilled shade tree mechanics tear into it. Not sure how it will look in the end.. it might dispense french fries, tampons or beer when they are done BUT it will be FREE!

I understand the pay to play, I’m fine with that... If Ford says that the tune blew my motor, then I’m going to turn to 5 Star, who’m I’ve bought the warranty through, guaranteeing their tune... and see if they honor it... we’ll see where it goes from there..

Keep in mind a local speed shop can put together a fully forged 2.3L with the works for about as much as a ford Crate motor costs...

Incorrect.

The *app* itself is tracking all of this, notice how it needs a location permission? The truck doesn't know about your GPS unless you have NAV, and none of that gets sent to Ford via FordPass anyways.

As a note the "California Opt-out" exists in anything that can have personal data, as part of the CCPA laws passed (CA's version of the EU GDPR regulations) - which allows you to request to be forgotten by anyone/anything that has data on you.

Ford can access certain info but I don't believe it has any long term memory. I think it's cleared after a specified amount of key cycles. As for the OP's issue, they've got it.
