Currently ford does my maint because I got a maintenance plan so.. oem stuff for now

Is royal purple still good? That and mobil 1
Are all I got when it came to full syn oil..switched to Mob1 when I couldn’t get royal purple on occasion, back then I was convinced they’re both high end brands (I do understand that high mid and low are all probably by small margins for the most part.)
I also put RP in my wife’s little car she likes that it’s actually purple oil ?.
Ford OE synthetic blend is as good as all the full synthetic blends! You are good! Mobil 1 is good too...as are all the others.... :)

As much as one would like to think that, I have seen it where individuals push the engine oil change interval farther than what the manufacturer recommends(whether that be 5,000 miles or 10,000 miles recommended) and engines getting trashed when it reaches above 50,000 miles. Part of why I will inform anyone else to simply follow the vehicle manufacturers recommend interval.
Yes, this is accurate. 10-15K mile intervals or 12 months is a good standard to live by, unless you drive harder or rev your engine offroad (not that I would know anyone). :lipssealed:

You didn't list my choice - Kirkland Full Synthetic - it is good enough for our retired Ford Engineer, so it is good enough for me - and it is significantly cheaper than anything else.
Seems to fair well.

Signature Series can be bought for cheaper. Typical retail stores with inflated prices. Signature Series is rated for 25,000 miles on non turbo vehicles.
Also don’t let the label on brands that say full synthetic fool you. The API only requires the minimum synthetic additives to the base oil to legally call it a “Full Synthetic”. A true full synthetic will have the base oil refined to as much as possible and recreate that molecule , then build off of that. That’s also where costs will be different between them. A true synthetic will not be the same cost as API minimum required additives oil.??
I would like to see where you got that information on the synthetic..... Sounds like a lot of BS to me....... When you compare it to others you find that it's really no different than others and it simply makes an individual pay way more than they should

Now I've done it!!!!!!

After doing the tire Brand Poll, I think it's time to do one on Motor Oil!!

Now you might be asking why right?! Well besides the fact that many seem to keep asking, I figure it would be fun to be the one triggering others on the discussion!!

So of the Brands listed, which one are you going with?
Mine is still under warranty so what Ford put in it, that's what it gets.

To be honest, I don't change my own oil. Haven't been to the dealership in over 2 years. I am coming do for my 69000 Mile change. Will check with my mechanic.

I'd argue that most never push their engines enough to warrant most oil changes. Unless you rev your engine, drive at higher speeds or offroad, and push your turbo-charger, I bet most oil change durations could be doubled for 80% of the population that aren't lead-footed on the accelerator.
I disagree. Lugging around competing in the gas mileage derby is equally bad for a turbocharged motor. Fresh detergent additives are as important as viscosity enhancers.

FWIW , link to article that appears to be reasonably accurate, it does mention AMSOIL as well as other leading brands including Mobil 1 . Read thru it but for the time being I'm sticking with my Wally Mart Syntech - besides being decent oil what could be more entertaining than a shopping trip to the local Wally Mart. And did you see the news - I think it was last week that the last K mart store closed, I recall 7 yrs back or so stopping in a Kmart and it was abysmal - mostly empty shelves, few shoppers and none under 70, so I felt at home, but while there I experienced a blue light special for the last time.

Regular drain interval?! Are you talking about the Time & Mileage interval the Vehicle Manufacturer recommends which overrides any Oil Manufacturer that claims they can go longer? I don't care what the Oil States as the oil companies will agree that you should always follow the Factory Recommended Interval

I retired from the motor oil industry about a year ago. We had a number of products positioned as "X miles" products, to keep it simple for the layman. The only time we recommended sticking with OEM service intervals was while under warranty. Just because you show Ford that you're using a 10k or 20k mile oil does not give you a pass on your warranty terms. Once you're out of warranty and they can't hold it over your head, you're free to follow the intervals warrantied by the oil manufacturer.

Ford doesn't want to get hit with a bunch of warranty repairs, so they recommend a conservative interval. Motor oil manufacturers do the same thing. The difference is that oil manufacturers generate intervals based on the properties of their products, but Ford has to base it on the cheapest thing on the market that just barely passes the relevant WSS-M2C series code specs.

Are you raising the BS flag on the base oil and what constitutes "fully synthetic"?

The Exxon website has a FAQ explaining API standards around base oils.
"Machinery Lubrication" website has an explainer as well. One from Pakelo.

It's true that what most brands are marketing as "synthetic" aren't full synthetics, but pass a certain threshold that allows them to be marketed as synthetic. Kind of like how "Kraft Singles" can't legally be marketed as cheese.

Generally, the options for synthetic oils at popular stores are for API Group III while people are thinking their actually buying API Group IV because of the language and marketing around the word "synthetic".

At least that's my rudimentary understanding of it. Dunno, I'm not an oil scientist or engineer and I could be dead wrong, but this is why I buy Amsoil "Full Synthetic" even if it does cost more compared to everything else because it's primarily API Group IV.

That, and I'm generally suspicious of the quality of anything that is low priced. I change my own oil once every 10k miles -- about every 9 or 10 months -- so I'm not going to worry too much about whether the total cost is $50 or $100.
