I've given up on my homemade setup. I modified the bracket tonight, but it still doesn't fit quite right. I don't want to drill into my truck, so I've given up.After seeing this detailed install, I went out to look thru my parts bin and found a couple of old struts and mounting brackets from when I put a strut on the trunk lid of my Capri - I had to experiment a bit with that to get the right strut and mounting. Anyway, I thought that my strut was just about perfect, and I had two brackets I could modify that I thought might work. I got close, but the upper bracket is too close to the tailgate cable. I'm going to see if I can find a longer bracket (or make one). I didn't want to drill into my new truck, so what I did thus far fits in the factory holes.
If I get it working I'll post the parts I used. At this point it has cost me nothing since these parts were just laying around. But I think parts wise it could probably be done for $20 or so.
More to come.
If anyone wishes to experiment more, I was using a gas strut from mcmaster-carr:

And a couple of their mounting brackets - I modified both -one to fit behind the bolt where the tailgate cable attaches and another one where the tailgate hinge attaches:

I was using this gas strut - it is very close to what is needed:
