At the risk of being identified as a forum outsider - I do not have a stinkin damper and not planning on one anytime soon.

I got it so my kids don’t smash their head open with it.

It was also a fun install.

Question: did installing the damper change the tension on your tailgate cables from the driver side to the passenger side?

I'm so on the fence about this. Last week I did wish I had one as I wanted to open the tailgate when I was standing in the bed.

BUT ... what's so bad about letting it slam open?

In the old days when it was just two metal pieces that pivoted in the middle, you always just let it slam open. I don't remember a tailgate ever falling off or being damaged. Back in the days when you could ride in the bed of a truck and even sit on the open tailgate going 30 mph down the road!

And our tailgates are really light, so what's the long term damage of letting it slam open? Apart from the smashing of little kid heads (which may explain why I'm like this as an old fart now).

This sounds like a possible Phil question. =)

I voted no, but I did actually buy one and installed it, but took it back off once the weather got cold...that thing squealed like a stuck pig. People in the Lowes parking lot actually cringed. It's not going back on.
