If the ASS works I decide if I am going to have a lot of stops and then I decide if I want to shut it off. I have total control. I have no problem pushing a button. And you can guess what my next sentence would have been usually, but if you have learned anything on this site, you know. Have a good day, TGIF. :D

Driving in Sport mode disables the ASS. In Sport mode, you turn it ON by pushing the button. Cool, huh?

ASS is not unique to the Ranger. Where is all of this data showing the ASS is prematurely roasting starters?
I'll never know. Because I always turn it off.

I work on my own vehicles and keep them for about 15+ years. Anything I can do to save on wear and tear and save money... I'm all in.

I understand people dont like the auto start/stop, but seriously, how hard is it to just press the damn button when you get in? Your hand is already going down there to the gear lever anyways, or just drive in sport.

Wow, this has almost the same feel as a tailgate damper thread.... ASS drove me mad, I could not unplug that wire fast enough once I learned of it. Been happy with a damped tailgate and an engine that stays running ever since!

Kudos to Ford for actually giving us the button to disable the "auto start / stop".

idle 800 rpm

lets assume your drive has 5 stops each way to work. an average stop light duration of 2 minutes.
5 days a week.
over a year your trucks pistons will scrape, wear and tear along the cylinder walls an extra 31200000 times more than mine over 15 years

thats alot of stroking aka: wear and tear
Fuzzy math. The harder that you push on gas pedal and the longer that you take to get in high gear or the faster that you drive equals more RPMS. So, idling is not the only way to increase strokes.

I wonder if simply unplugging the auto-start-stop button does anything. Probably not, but it would be nice if the system detected that the button wasn't there and decided to disable the feature. I'd rather that than using forscan tbh (and definitely rather unplug the button than the BMS)

Edit: tried it and it still auto stopped.

It is the BMS or Battery Monitor Sensor. It monitors the state of charge of your battery and provides input to the Body Control Module, which controls all of the electronics in your Ranger. The BCM also talks to your Powertrain Control Module, that uses that information to control the output of the alternator, which provides power to your vehicle and charges your battery.

So what happens when you disconnect the BMS? Two computers in your Ranger lose data from that sensor. The alternator operates at full capacity, charging your battery when it doesn’t need to charge, wearing out the battery and the alternator and drawing more power from the engine resulting in less efficiency or lower MPG.

Can you unplug it? Yes. Go ahead.

Edit: I just thought of another benefit to unplugging. If your battery gets low while your car has been parked for days in the airport’s remote parking lot, you will not get a message on your FordPass app that “connectivity services are being shutdown to conserve battery.”
Thanks for the explanation on what happens when un-unplugging. The service dept. at my dealership said that I shouldn't unplug it because it could create problems.

I don't believe it talks to the ecm or bcm as it has no codes or hard codes .The ford pass app even shows nothing . I will leave it unplugged and not worry about it .

Well, my Auto Start/Stop actually STOPPED on it's own. No need to push a button, disconnect/reconnect or add a night light. Maybe working as intended? :)

All you have to do is plug a $3 night light into the 110VAC socket on the back of the console and the auto stop won't work. Anytime you want it to work, just unplug the light. I found a blue one on Amazon that isn't very bright at all. If you prefer no light at all, just paint the light black.
Does that work on a 2020 model, I plugged in a phone charger and mine is still enabled, only turns off in sport mode.
