I bet there is more damage than you think. Wouldnt doubt the frame was bent and needs straighten.

I would think the labor would be a lot higher for frame damage. Although, the cost will jump when the truck gets into the shop.

I had a 2017 Kia that was damaged in the hail storm here. Initial estimate was $8,000, total cost at the end was $16,000. They had to replace the hood, trunk, A-pillars, and roof. It didn't get into the shop until 14 months after the hail storm and the insurance companies stopped totaling cars unless they *actually* went over replacement cost of a new car. My car was like $17,500 new and they actually paid $16,000.

Just before Xmas the rear end of my truck was tagged by some contractor truck not watching the lights... it was a relatively light hit, but still not awesome.

This is the damage:

This is the repair estimate. now both tail lights were damaged, so I know thats like $1500+ right there. But there is no body work damage other than some paint on the tailgate, and overall seemed to be minor in terms of what happened.

Fortunately, since it a rear ending - the other guy is paying for it all (via insurance)... But still blown away at the costs here.
It looks to me the bumper is bent and likely a backup sensor is trashed (at least one). Body work, and really nothing else is cheap these days, and really, I don't think the cost of the repair is any different than I would have estimated. I said I thought your bumper is bent, but the plastic may just be making it look that way, but at least the plastic part will have to be replaced.

Collision damage and Insurance rates are out of control. If the tail lights are working, I would just replace the bumper, unless there is more damage than what the picture shows. Good luck.
Sorry about the crunch and HUGE ouch on the total!

But, as said above:

My granddaughter, just after we spent months of driving with her and giving her a 2004 Lexus 330, rearended a pickup, probably while she was playing with a cell phone. It smashed the front end of the Lexus. I worked on it for months and brought the total repair costs in a bit over $1k. The biggest expense was getting the frame straightened. Used high intensity discharge headlights came from Ebay, the hood and miscellaneous frame and support bracket parts came from a Pickyourpart junkyard and I used a hair drier to straighten the bumper cover. I welded the huge gash in the bumper cover using an adjustable wood burning iron from Wallyworld and spin bonding using a variable speed Dremel type tool and plastic welding rods from Harbor Freight. After a little sanding, filling and painting using touchup paint, again from Wallyworld, it looked fine. If you're willing to put in the work, scrounged parts can be found and a vehicle restored.

It adds up fast. My 2019 went from what looked like it'd be reparable to just under $28,000 in damages.

After the body shop went through it: o_O

And this was before I pilfered all the deleted items off of it. ?

I got tagged on the L/R corner of the bumper. It pushed it far enough in to just contact the sheet metal. What I didn't notice immediately was it actually bowed the box side out over the rear wheel well. A new box side and bumper extension later......over $6000 in damage. They definitely seem to be weak in the rear bumper area......

Thats absolutely wild - I guess crumple zones are there for a reason and energy absorbing structures under the bumper... but wow.

It absorbs some of the shock with a series of rubber donuts on the receiver shaft. Rated for 30 mph.

Likely they are replacing the receiver hitch assembly as well as its part of the bumper sub assembly. Ran into that once on a former ford truck. Ford dealer body shop saw a scuff on the receiver hitch and estimated a replacement hitch. I asked why and they said that it was a potential liability and if they saw it was hit as part of accident, it gets replaced automatically. Otherwise they wouldn't take on the repair job. I'd imagine they'll put the OP's truck on the frame rack and verify that crumple zones weren't impacted.

Yeah I hope they do. I've been under the truck a lot since the crash replacing leaf springs, and a number of other projects. From what I could see its just the bumper mount that crumpled a bit and not even by much.
