Truck says I am averaging 23.5 MPG
Based on my calculations it is about 23 MPG

I am fairly light on the accelerator most of the time.

The next page says, "For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer."

Reading is fundamental.

What the manual actually states, as MT19RANGER already stated:

"For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer."

So it's always the "best" (not my opinion, it's what Ford says)... and even better in hot weather and when towing.

Just filled up and computer said 21.9 and using calculator got 21.82 so mine is accurate.

I filled up on my XL/STX SCab, 4x4, 80% was city driving, and I got 22.6 hand, computer, 21.7. Used 88 E15.

Averaging about 22-23 overall. Highest has been 24+ on long trips and lowest is 15-16 when just commuting. Always 87 octane as running 91 proved a negligible difference in fuel mileage for me. YMMV...

I’m very happy with the mileage I’m getting. These obviously are the truck computer calculations but when I figure out real MPG it’s only slightly worse. This is a Lariat FX4 Supercrew.

First one is a small test to see what I can get driving very conservatively so far on this tank (310km = 193 miles and 8.4L/100km = 28mpg).

This one hasn’t been reset since I picked the truck up 2720km (1690mi) ago, and it’s getting 9.2L/100km (25.6mpg).

Let me attempt to help here.

If you are driving on a flat highway in cruise control you will see minimal diff between 87 and 91/93.

If you are pushing it hard and like peak performance numbers in hp and tq...you WILL SEE about a 13hp and 10 to 15tq increase while in the peak power band using a premium fuel.

If you are really OCD.

87 for highway trips.

91/93 around town IF there isn't much traffic and you like to push it.

87 of you are stuck in traffic crawling along between 0 and 20 in your commute.

91 /93 of the temps are greater than 85 to 90 F....no matter HOW you drive....in other words southern states should prob run premium from May to Oct no matter what.

Going up a mountain run.....use premium....coming down the mountain run 87

Etc. Etc.

Premium fuel helps most significantly when you are really pushing the engine or ambient temps ate hot.

It offers a very minimal advantage of you drive like a nearly blind 90 year old on a 50 degree night on an empty highway.

Premium fuels have higher quality detergents (I run shell almost exclusively) and may minimize injector issues in the long run and you should run it intermittently....nontheless 87 octane is perfectly fine for most people most of the time.......except for towing up a hill on a hot day or drag racing that Colorado owner who is always talking smack. ....then a premium is defiantly the better option.
