OBDII device for Forscan

What ODBII devices is everyone using with Forscan. Has anyone tried one of the Bluetooth adapters. I was thinking maybe this one:

On the Forscan website they specifically say that using Bluetooth or WiFi is not a good idea. Wired connections are the preferred interface. Your changing and writing to you computer. Any hiccups could brick it. For me not worth the risk. Even the wired one they suggest a known brand that they have tested and approve of.

Well then I guess they changed their minds about that because they do in fact recomend two different bluetooth models for Android and one for IOS.

I got the $20 unit from Amazon and it said to download a driver (that was my first clue, I haven't had to download a driver for anything in like 10 years) but when I went to their website there were no drivers there. Sent it back for a refund. My bud has the $60 unit and brought it to the Ford Nationals and we got me hooked up for tire size and Bambi Mode.

You cannot do what they consider "dangerous" write commands using the mobile versions (Android and iOS) - And they still appear to not really recommend using Android or iOS From the FAQ on forscan.org:


Why "Lite" version for mobile platforms and not "full"?


"Lite" means this version of application is simplified to be used on mobile devices as safe as possible. Service and Programming functions are not safe, and using them on mobile devices is quite not desirable because of the platforms nature: using wireless devices (that are less reliable than USB ones), possibility to get application killed or freezed by OS during a critical operation (e.g. because of incoming call or other reason) and so on. Nevertheless, we think on adding relatively safe service functions to FORScan Lite.

I have this and I needed to download drivers for it. It was kind of tedious, having to install drivers in a certain order, but it works flawlessly.

I ordered this one it should be here today.

I made a dumb mistake yesterday. I downloaded forscan and thought I could use the OBD2 adapter that is for my sct bdx tuner and when I plugged it into my laptop it fried the motherboard.

I ordered a new and upgraded MSI laptop yesterday with an Amazon prime discount and it should be way better for running by mastercam simulations.

Expensive mistake.

Yea some of the keys haven't worked since 2019 so I always kept an extra keyboard for it. It got me through my manufacturing degree modeling parts and programming toolpaths to cut them and it also got me through most of my mechanical engineering degree doing the same thing but more designing and analysis. The new laptop has twice the RAM, twice the storage, and a way beefier graphics card. I think this was a good thing, but still an expensive mistake.
