I looked at a few of the comments and some were saying they were abusing it. I had to laugh - if a truck can't take the little bit of wheel spin on snow and ice, it isn't a truck I want to own!
Yeah, I was cracking up at those comments. If a little wheelspin offroading is "abusing" a truck my ranger has survived some pretty serious abuse. Seems a whole lotta truck buyers don't realize what their vehicles are designed to do.

I am sure Toyota will fight them on whatever it is being under warranty or not, but this should not be happening on a truck with <4k miles on it.

They show some pictures of the undercarriage but they aren't the best pictures. I hope they do at least a short when they get the truck up on a lift and see what's going on.

As much as the guys in the video poke fun at Andre, I prefer Andre to most of the other guys on the channel. (The Son isn't bad either, i guess.)

What was the talk of having to go from 4lo into 4hi before going into 2wd? I guess in our trucks the knob goes 4l, 4h, 2h so the knob has to pass by the 4h everytime but the taco has buttons to switch into so the system isn't smart enough to go into 4h from 4l? seems like that's not a good system. . .

I believe (but could be wrong since I've only done it a couple times) - you have to go to neutral and then to 4HI before switching back to 2WD. Going in is kind of the same - you have to go thru 4HI to get to 4LOW. And going in/out of low range requires you to be in neutral - I thought that was pretty standard behavior.

What I saw was the computer seemed confused and they couldn't get it out of low range, even though it was effectively a 2WD truck at that point. They finally got the computer to figure things out and go back into 4HI (which was really 2HI).

Roman was clearly freaked out and afraid he was going to get blamed for breaking it. Andre was taking things in a more logical fashion I think.

Roman, that's his name. he is very dismissive of Andre in all the videos. . . but he seems much more knowledgeable than roman.

When it was confused, why didn't they turn it off and back on or disconnect the battery and turn it back on . . . A reset of sorts for the computer and sensors. that wouldn't have fixed whatever went pop/crack/bang, but it could have "fixed" the computer. Driving from where they were back to boulder in 4L would have been painful, they would have had to bring the trailer out. . .

If that is how the transfer case works (which I have no reason to doubt) and if I remember correctly that is how my taco was with the lever on the floor - I had to shift into 4H, pause, shift into 4L, shift into gear and move. Did you catch the part where they were saying, if you are in 4L, you have to go into 4H and than 2H. (and the opposite to engage 4L) that seems a silly set of steps - isn't the computer smart enough to go ohh wait, they want 4L, I have to go into 4H first, and than 4L? if it is not, that seems like a point for improvement in software updates. . . for crying out loud, they are buttons that are pushed not levers anymore.

~30 miles of on road driving in 4L would be so miserable. lol

I've always enjoyed the "buddy bickering" between Roman and Andre. They both have their moments, hah.

What do you guys make of Andre's early theory that Roman's skipping the 4L-4H-2H sequence could have caused this? I would hypothesize that software would prevent you from doing mechanical damage in this scenario...but... new truck.

I'm guessing the mechanical failure has the computer not receiving correct responses from sensors in the transfer case/transmission or wherever the mechanical break happened. Will be interested to see. I'm sure they will cover this ad nauseum.

Maybe someone knows, was there a change to the transfer case? Odd thing to break. I'm guessing likely the chain popped that drives the front axle output shaft and then hi/low gear was a little jammed up with the chain. It would make sense why rocking/driving back and forth a little finally freed it up to shift back to 4H.

I used to watch TFL, but so much whining really got old. At least that's how it came across to me. They'd also take out top of the line rigs and never use the fancy trail modes and fail their "test." I seem to remember like Andre, but the other guys just became unwatchable.

I'm curious as to what broke on it. Sounded like the transfer case popped out of 4wd low. Possibly 4wd wasn't fully engaged by the electronic shift actuator given the weirdness in getting it to shift back to 4wd high and 2wd.

It looked like they attached the tow strap to a safety chain hanger instead of using a shackle hitch receiver? I doubt the chain hanger is rated for much of a pull.

Im not gonna say this looks bad for toyota unless this is a common problem.

Shouldn't have happened on such a truck but who knows, maybe all the right possibilities occurred at the wrong time.

I've seen people break their feet simply stepping off a sidewalk awkwardly.

Remember that user here that had the bracket for his tensioner pulley actually break off? Freak break there.
