Hey Guys, I’m looking to throw some new wheels on my 2020 XLT. I currently have 285/70R17’s on my truck and I’m just looking to add a wheel that will give me a little bit of a wider stance. I live in MA and here spacers are illegal. (Very sad.) I just want a little bit of a wider stance, I have read about -12mm offset but I’m not sure which wheel to settle on. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know! Thanks!

If you change the offset you will run into tire rub on the crash bars. Stock is -55. I changed to 0 offset and my 265/70/17s hit the front bars and I had to install ready lift bars in the front.

The stock offset for our trucks is +55mm. I'm running stock wheels with a 2.5" lift, LT285/70R17 tires, Ready Lift intrusion bars, and a 1" spacer. The spacer reduces the offset to +30mm. Most aftermarket wheels will offer a +25mm offset. I don't recommend doing anything less than that. Otherwise, you will be removing intrusion bars. A -12mm offset will kick the tires way out past the fenders. You will have to deal with wear from excess tire scrub when turning and possibly cutting fenders to clear the tires.

Stock is +55mm. See how much 30mm is on a tape measure and that's how much farther out a +25mm wheel will be. You didn't say if you'd consider clearanced crash bars and/or bigger flares. Less positive offset makes the tires swing in a wider arc. In any case, don't go past 0 offset.

Hey Jimmy,

What’s your current front suspension setup? Levelled? Lifted? How much? Crash Bars Intact? Aftermarket crash bars in place?

Shea (@NvrFinished ) makes some very good points above. Lowering offset sounds simplement enough but it brings up issues. When your wheels are straight ahead, they push your tires out, giving you some poke - just what you wanted, right?

When your wheels are turned, the part of your wheel that’s still inside the wheel well, gets pushed toward whatever is inside there.

On the driver’s side with wheels turned to the left, you risk hitting the rear crash bar, crush block, and wheel liner. Turned fully to the right, you could run into the front crash bar, fog light housing, wiring harness, and wheel well liner.

Wider tires, like the ones you have, and negative offsets might give you a certain look, but they are not plug n play and could require a lot more modifications than you want to make.

You seem genuinely concerned about keeping it legal by not running wheel spacer. With those tires, running anything below +20mm offset will push them well outside the fenders, well beyond the legal limit.

I run 275s on +15mm offset and without my fender flares, they are certainly not legal and the stuf they kick up, beats the heck out of the sides of my Ranger.

Good luck!

OP, are you sure about spacers being illegal? Or that spaced out wheel/tires beyond the fender are not legal? I searched and couldn't find any indications that either federal or states have banned them.

Nevertheless, mine started out with Fuel/Shok 17 x 9 +20offset mounted with 285/70-17s...they just had a tiny poke but the treads were inside the fenders...then I added 28.5mm (1 1/8") spacers for a total of 48.5mm offset...which were then covered by Air Design flairs...

Yes. I live in PA and I can tell you that wheel spacers are illegal here and in MA. That's the only two states as far as I know. I'm not a fan of them anyway.
That's not to say you couldn't get some and just take them off at state inspection time then put them back on, but if they cause a problem (like an accident) or if you get pulled over for something else and the cop spots them then it's yo' ass.

Thanks guys, I don’t have much on the ole beast right now besides the 285s. I kept stock wheels and just removed the plastic coverings on the crash bars( not the actual bars themselves.) I do have a 2.5” leveling kit buts that’s it. I’ve been looking into the high clearance ant intrusion bars, will probably have those done first. Spacers are illegal here, spoke to a family friend police officer about it so that sucks…
I do plan on installing aftermarket fender flares so that sounds like it would help.

I went from stock wheels (55mm offset) to a set of KMC's with a 18mm offset, a set of Mickey Thompson A/T's 265/70/17 and they have just the right amount of poke. Personally, I wouldn't go my then about 20mm offset. My wheels are 26 lbs so I spent a lot of time trying to find light wheels and tires.

These are +25 Icon Vector 6s on 265/70/17, so a little narrower than what you're running, if this helps.

These KMC Trek wheels are 17 x 8 with +20mm offset with 265/70-17 tires, FP level kit and ReadyLift Anti-Intrusion bars installed. Tires rubbed on rear bars at 3/4 of full turn with some suspension compression. Tires moved outward by 1-3/8”. I installed RokBlokz XL mud flaps and they do a good job keeping the junk off the sides of the truck.
