You love that tune into the tuner box and then you're ready to go.
That sounds sexual!
But yeah, the thing that scared me was you need to keep the battery voltage from dropping too low. So EVERYTHING has to be off, don't open the doors or do anything, healthy battery. I even connected a battery charger before I did the download for extra measure. And I opened the window, shut the door and started the download so I didn't have to sit in the truck the whole time.
Might have been to paranoid, but it all went smoothly. Uploading the actual tunes are much quicker.

Hello all! As some of you may have seen in the other thread, my Ranger is currently at the dealership getting the transmission warrantied. During this down time I thought, why not look into tuning choices? It's something I've been contemplating but want to pull the trigger on soon. I'm between the (probably) most common 3 tuners; Livernoise, Ford Performance or Unleashed. I'm not looking for big power, but rather smooth shifting power. The wife doesn't mind a more powerful truck, but she's not a fan of clunky or hard shifting. Can anyone advise which tuner is best to go with for a nice noticeable bump in power but also a smooth shifting experience? I don't mind running it on 93, but I do have 91 readily available if that's a possible option. Thank you!
When I had my Ranger I did the FP and was very p,eased. It was like being in SPORT mode when in STD mode.

The Ford performance tune is a bit picky due to the fact on how Ford wants you to do things. Livernoise on the other hand there's a bit simpler. Once you get the tuner box you plug into the truck and let it download information. It does take about 10 to 15 minutes. After that you send the information to livernois via email and they will respond with a new tune. You load that tune into the tuner box and then you're ready to go.
How is it different from the Ford procedure?

Ford tune is pretty simple. Download the tune from the app, connect to the truck. It downloads your original tune and then you install the new tune. No big deal.

I had 30 years of ASE certification in all automotive areas so I wasn’t too worried. I let it expire when I no longer needed it. I also taught for a manufacturer so I wasn’t too concerned about proving my credentials.

question for those of you that have the Ford Tune, are you able to do Forscan mods with the tune loaded?

What was not plug and play? Did you run into any kind of issues?

LB
My idea of plug and play is: You plug in device, it completes the download, unplug, done.

Livernois Motorsports is a bit more involved:
First, you need a laptop not a smartphone.
Plug in Tuner to laptop and update and register the Tuner
Plug in Tuner to truck, download truck information and stock tune
Plug in Tuner back to laptop, upload information to Livernois MS
Log in to Livernois MS with laptop, request the tune (this is where you tell them what other mods you have)
Wait 2-5 days (my case was 3 days) to get confirmation from Livernois MS that your tune is ready
Plug in Tuner back to laptop, download your custom tune
Plug in Tuner back to truck, upload the custom tune

The above instructions are simple. But I guarantee many folks will miss a step somewhere or disconnect too soon, or some other thing distracts them, or they try to do all this at a Costco parking lot or something. LOL! I know it's funny but I'll bet Livernois MS has gotten lots of phone calls!

Thanks for the reply. I was curious why you think the FPT is a bit picky.
It's more of Fords special processes more than anything. I suspect it's similar to Livernoise, but also keep in mind that the Ford Performance Tune takes the Factory 5 Year 60,000 Miles Powertrain Warranty and Downgrades it to a 3 Year 36,000 Mile Warranty. Oh and that is based of the original purchase date of the vehicle BTW

Better than no warranty with an aftermarket tune. I’m not sure anyone has had a powertrain warranty declined because of a Ford tune. If they have speak up. I’m past it anyway.

I agree with you, it is simple, and probably not much different than doing any other tune. I did mine a year and a half ago and it went smoothly.

I was just interested in knowing how someone with no knowledge of the install procedure would imply that it was an issue.

I had the transmission completely rebuilt with 113,000 miles on the truck covered by the Ford Extended warranty and Unleashed Tune installed since about 5k.

So you left on the tune when it went in for trans work? Some people opt to revert to stock tune first. For whatever reason.
