I don't have them loaded at the moment, but here is what I have, I also added 2X eye hooks to the extra holes in the front of the bed for the ratchet strap.

Vents - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZT3GPKR?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Spout that fits capless filler - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S42B8T9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Can caps to replace the stupid nozzle that calif requires - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0834F71BK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Cans - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007M4VRO?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

This works well, and only when I need it, and at a fraction of the cost of a built in tank. There are other options that are good, like the above deck marine tank, but it is not portable when filled, and I wanted something I could easily take out if I needed the bed space.
I have a generic tri-fold tonneau cover and am worried if this solution will make my bed smelly and all the materials in the bed such as camping tent, sleeping bags, etc become smelly of gas? Wonder if you have an issue like this or is it a non-issue and my paranoid mind going off wildly for nothing?

I ordered 2 for now, that gets me to 30 gals. That gets me up to around 400 mile working range with a few gals in reserve. Once I get them fitted, will see how low the stack of 2 hangs and what makes sense.

FWIW, I have a GFC on the back of mine so fuel inside the bed is not an option. I do also have a Rigd ultraswing with the sidehack which can carry a 4 gal rotopax but I’m using that position for a 6 gal propane tank. Running out of space for things!!! Heh

I haven't had an issue with gas smell, I fill the cans to 90% and insure the cap and vent is closed. As I have a tri-fold cover also direct sunlight is not an issue. Just be sure to have the can out of the bed before opening the vent to release pressure. I sometimes will tip the can vent up before opening it to insure no gas shoots out. The spout fits the Ranger filler just fine, just don't open the vent until you get the spout in as the gas really flows fast.

I use the tall plastic 5 gal cans. Fill them ~95%, then squeeze all the air out when I seal the cap. When they swell, they return to regular shape. No leaks, no stress, no ballooned cans that won't stand up, and under negative pressure so when you crack the seal, no fuel vapour blasting out.

Here is a photo, the traction boards work well to give added protection to the cans, I didn't go with the tall military type cans as I have a bed cover.

Thanks for sharing. I use the Harbor Freight metal jerry cans but think the vents will be a nice addition. Funny thing, I strap them in the same location but put my traction boards in-between the tanks and the bed.

$300? Holy shit
I mean, expensive? Sure.

As expensive as the LRA tank? Not a chance.

$2100 for 17 gallons extra (36 gallon total capacity) = $123/gallon

$450 for 18 gallons extra = $25/gallon

It's all about utility and your situation.

I have a 8 gallon on my rack.. Picked it up with dual locks before coverd for $100. But I'd rather have a 36 gallon replacement tank... Who likes to stop and dump into the tanks ?

Expensive, yes, also a PIA to get under the truck and pull them out once dropped, (think rain) and unless you finish with a metal plate they will be vulnerable to damage from off road debris. Also, I need a spare tire!

Another option.

I could set it up with a small 12v fuel pump. I’veseen people T into their fuel filler but that probably counts as tampering with your emissions. Pumping right through your existing gas filler is less convenient but easier in some ways.
