The larger your reserve tank the more you lose in total towing capacity. Gallon of fuel weighs. 6.3 pounds per gallon. Doesn’t sound like a lot until you start calculating how many extra gallons your adding

That is true but there are replacement leafs that do help with this

After pulling my trailer over 6K miles, I have verifiable and repeatable results over 40+ fill ups. I get 10.3 mpg. The range on an 18 gal tank may be fine on the East coast where gas station density is high, but it is uncomfortable in the Northwest where stations can be few and far between. The factory tank is just too small for the rated towing capacity.
+1 on this. Did a 4700 mile trip from the Great Lakes to the South West this spring with my 4000 lb TT, got 10.5 MPG average for trip. once you get West of the Mississippi the gas station density starts dropping. When your 50 mile warning comes up you better hit the next one you see regardless of brand, because the next one may be too far. Ask me how I know. Thank heavens for road service.

the 34 gallon tank being developed is 16 gallons more than stock. 16x6.3lbs is 100.8 lbs extra.

100 lbs is really not a lot if you're already near the limit....... if you're that worried about it, just leave the kids behind?

The tank being metal is also a lot heavier. I'd do it if we had a 25gallon option since this one hangs down too low for my liking.

@Frenchy - Embrace the silly!
@slowmachine - Your logic and verifiable references make perfect sense if you live/recreate in urban areas
@J Krutsch - You get it. Those that don't live and spend all their time in the rural West just don't have a point of reference. I routinely play in areas where fuel stations are few and far between.

Bring on the big tank!

I suspect you’ve missed my point, which is that, given an identical load and route, the Ranger very likely has similar range to the other mid-size trucks available in the USA, and that buying a larger truck is more likely to increase range, towing or not, than switching to another mid-size.

Not sure how this applies, but I don’t live in or near an urban area. I spent most of my adult life in the southwest deserts, CA, AZ, NV. I know how far the next fuel stop can be when you’re not on the interstate. It’s good to have extra fuel, even in cans.

If you are wondering why I didn't use the same roof in my Frontier and Ranger. Obviously the test of the frontier were before the ranger because I traded the frontier in for the Ranger mind you I didn't trade the frontier in for the ranger for fuel mileage reasons. We'll just say I was in a wonderful situation to say the least.

@slowmachine - I can’t argue, there are certainly other options that come from the factory with greater range. But, I want a Ranger with greater range. Fingers crossed that option becomes available shortly.

The hanging too low is my main concern since I go off road often enough to worry about that. I emailed them a while back when I first saw the pics if they would make anything in the 24-28 gallon range with better ground clearance and never heard back.

I want the range for towing but for now I bring two jerry cans with me when I go somewhere new and am not sure where all the fuel stops are.

The plan is to make the swap easy. As for an offset tank on the passenger side can't happen due to the exhaust location. Also the size for the Australian Rangers is 140L or about 37 gallons for the replacement tank. Due to the US ranger having the EVAP canister on the fuel tank the size of the tank will most likely be smaller but it is unknown as to how much.
Anything ever happen with this? I would be interested.

That’s what I understand as well. Spoke to LR a few weeks ago and it’s all up in the air. I’m starting to look around for other options such as a full custom fuel cell. My milage drops into the single digits pushing a head wind over mount passes. This bring ls my useable rang down to as low as 150 miles.

i have a baja trip planned and my fuel situation is a mess.

As long as you can be patient I would suggest holding off on adding an additional tank. How long you have to be patient? I have no idea.
