It's Official, but different

My company recently made a change. They 'sold' nearly the entire IT group to what I call a Body Shop. Meaning, they made a deal with the devil to move 500 people, give or take, to a 3rd party, and we all now work as contractors for the original company. The new company is in the biz to provide 'bodies' for hire, and the old company decided it was best to expense the cost of the employees instead of have them (us) as overhead.

I just turned 62, so I said F that noise. I needed to stay on for 6 weeks with the new company to get my insurance for some 'stuff'. But, today, I officially told my manager (from the old company) in a private call, of my intention to tender my resignation in 2 weeks. I gave her the heads up as a courtesy, because she's been awesome.

So, this is it. In a month, (2 weeks, plus my 2 week notice) then I'll be retired.

Congratulations. I was blessed to be able to retire at 64. Been 3 1/2 years now and was the best decision I ever made. It’s a mindset change for sure but you’ll forget about all the BS as time passes ( until someone posts about it ?). Enjoy!

Well, might not be the way you planned to go Tom but I'm happy for anybody that gets to retire. Happy days ahead! I retired at 62 also and it's not so bad.

Had a similar thing happen to me 19 years ago. After 27 years my employer decided to outsource part of their engineering group. I was on a project that they needed to complete and couldn't loose all the experience on. I along with multiple others were outsourced to a major "technical service provider", read "job shop". At first was a major gut punch, but turned out for the best. Old company went through some major management shakeups with more layoffs. Got to watch from the outside looking in. Spent the next 13 year, till I turned 65, doing projects for the old company and working with many of my old colleagues.

Been retired 6 years now and enjoying the good life. By the way, what day of the week is it? ?

It's been 17 months for me. Best thing that ever happened to me. I hope it works out for you.

Retired at 48. It’s been great. I still freelance when I want to. Mostly travel. In Iceland now. I could have worked longer and made a lot of money, but having the time is more important to me.

Really sorry it's not the way you intended it... but not surprised. So f***ing like corporate America. While I'm not IT, my employer has done the same crap. And our IT service SUCKS. Can you say "India?" Don't get me started. I've got a bit less than 4 years to go. (But who's counting?! ) But often remind myself that if some Corporate America shit comes my way at this point in my career, at least I won't be out hunting a job. I'll just be retiring a bit earlier than I planned. Got to say, brings some real peace during particularly annoying work days.

I'm thinking you'll be fine. Just look at all the posts from the lucky already retired members here.

April 30, 2028 is my target. Actually would like to go out Oct. 2027 but my compensation plan as well as our profit sharing program will keep me there through April of '28. On the other hand, if 2027 is an absolute shit year for the company..... no point in waiting around for nothing. So it could end up being Oct. 2027 by default.

OMFG I simply cannot wait. While I cringe because it could be argued that I am wishing my life away, and I am NOT, I am just so over the corporate ??. Over it. O V E R it. Can honestly say, once I retire, I will never look back. At that point "Kiss my grits!" corporate world.

Any of you that laugh at that grits comments are dating yourselves!
