Thanks all for the well wishes. I will be fine financially, but still a bit apprehensive about it. I've got a decent sum in 401k, a small pension from an old company and will sign up for SS probably starting in 2025.

Here is a corporate FU story for you, I'll keep it short, but it's so much longer than there is space to type it. A friend started with a big company right out of high school when he was 18 yo. Worked there 30 years. Promises of a full pension, blah blah blah. At the age of 48, the company was sold and they cut off pension payouts at age 50. He was less than 2 years away to qualify. He worked at the new company for several years until they showed him the door, probably because he made too much money.

I've been semi-retired for 9+ years now and this past year even more retired. Being self employed for the past 38 years has it challenges but so much better than dealing with all the corporate BS! I was lucky enough to sell my business back in MA and start another one in AZ which grew more than expected, I'm still getting calls for work there. After moving to AR (and turning 60 next week) I'm not sure I have it in me to start a 3rd one and once the building permits are approved I'll be pretty busy with the house for the next 6-8 months. I've told a few people what I do and have passed out my cards so we'll see what happens. Let's just say I'm not going out of my way looking for it now. lol

Like Steve @Stevedbvik1 said "it's a mind set" which I'm still trying to get use to because I've always been a worker and a saver. The Polish in me has a hard time spending money. ? Bottom line is you'll be fine and better off without all the BS in your life. Just live within your means and take everyday as a gift. Good luck!!

April 30, 2028 is my target. Actually would like to go out Oct. 2027 but my compensation plan as well as our profit sharing program will keep me there through April of '28. On the other hand, if 2027 is an absolute shit year for the company..... no point in waiting around for nothing. So it could end up being Oct. 2027 by default.

OMFG I simply cannot wait. While I cringe because it could be argued that I am wishing my life away, and I am NOT, I am just so over the corporate ??. Over it. O V E R it. Can honestly say, once I retire, I will never look back. At that point "Kiss my grits!" corporate world.

Any of you that laugh at that grits comments are dating yourselves! :giggle:

I thought about retiring , but a
workers comp injury has delayed that decision for me , so I'll be off work right up until I don't have to anymore ... THEN , I will DEMAND my job back ? so I can stay on for my "revenge" tour where I aggravate the total shit out of them for a short while untill I tire of it ,then I'll probably just quit showing up for a while, then pop back in at the last minute , where is the fun in just leaving ? After all those years ? No way I just whimper away without a MAJOR scene, couldn't live with myself ...

I still have a few years. On our river cruise we were the youngest couple. We kept getting asked if we were retired or what we did for a living. We had a great conversation with an older couple and the guy gave us some sage advice. Don't retire from something, retire to something. Meaning plan for what you want to do in retirement. And then told us about a friend who spends his retirement doing practically nothing but a lot of TV watching. That won't be me.

Great advice! I've seen so many just retire with absolutely nothing to do but watch tv and they wither away in a few years. Your brain needs exercise just like the rest of your body does so even just getting out and walking every day helps. Even volunteering in your local community is a good way of just getting out and staying active. It doesn't take a lot of money to stay busy and have fun.

There are many days find myself so busy I think to myself "how'd I work all those years and still find time to get everything around here done"? Then there are days that go by slowly but thats fine too because even a slow, boring day beats any day working!

:surprised: :puke::facepalm:
Oh hell no! I'll be busy. But busy doing what I want versus a job that I have to do.

I quit working at 50. Was let go due to the company wanting to sell in India. Part of the deal was they had to bring in many H1B visa workers. I got laid off due to that on my 50th birthday. They made me sign a paper saying I wouldn't sue them because of I had just turned 50 to get my bonuses and comp time payments. Well a couple weeks later I got a call to come back as a contractor and I let them have it. I did not hold back. Decided to just drop out of the workforce and it was the best move I ever made. It's scary at first living off savings but worth it in the end. Having time to do what you want and try new things is priceless. My wife started calling things that I made Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations and a couple years later I started a youtube channel by that name to keep me busy and make a little income to supplement SS.
