I've been frustrated with the cap-less fuel filler since i bought my ranger. CA law requires the bulky "vapor recover hood" on every gas pump hose nozzle. .

I ALWAYS have one of two problems...

#1: I cannot get the nozzle to latch onto the Easy Fuel hole and end up having to hold it in myself until it is done filling, otherwise it backs out and stops fueling.

#2: Whenever is does latch on, it become stuck, and i either have to twist the nozzle back and forth or slam it in and out to remove it.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Its pretty annoying.. its the same situation every time no matter what.. at this point i think i would prefer just a standard fuel cap.

I have had that problem on occasion. I think it has something to do with the gas nozzle more than the truck.

sounds like i need to take a road trip to California and experience this first hand
You're not missing much. I haven't had any issues.
Can it really be an issue on certain vehicles? Seems like all the pieces for that part of the truck should all be exactly the same.

I live in San Diego and have had this happen on occasion when I first got the truck but 13k miles in I have it down to the point where I don't have either issue. I also go to the same gas station just about every time so it may be a issue at other stations.

I have the same issue. Doesn't matter what station I am at, I have to hold it or it won't pump gas.

I've had touch/go issues with California's vapor recovery nozzles ever since I've been here in 2016, both in my '15 Mustang and my '19 Ranger. It seems hit/miss, some nozzles just go in and sit/stay better than others. I've never had issues with it "burping" incorrectly and stopping early unless the nozzle has slid out of the filler. It's definitely finicky though and can take a few times to get it right I've noticed. I think it's more a design issue with the recovery system than with the capless design.

I've had occasional issues with regular nozzles, not even the hood ones. If everything is working well it works fine, but if something's off it just doesn't. (Maybe the particular venturi design in the nozzle is too sensitive, maybe the flow from the nozzle is too high, maybe there's something just not quite right in the angle of the filler, who knows?) I tend to think the capless technology isn't quite ready, but the long term intent seems to be to get rid of the hood pumps entirely because the capless designs achieve the same goals and are probably better overall. I guess at some point you need to just start rolling them out, though it'll be interesting to see if improvments in filler technology get fully deployed before EVs make that moot.

I have that problem at certain stations. There is a Costco I go to that I have never had the nozzle stay in the filler. Other Costco's with the same nozzle give me no problem. Go figure.

I'm staying out of the political aspect of this thread but I must say, as a former military member
who has lived all over the country, I was sooo happy to get back to Calif. That being said, when those big rubber nozzle boots first showed up my father-in-law used to call them a foreskin. Lol.

This is the first vehicle I have had with the 'capless' system and I have not experienced any problem. Or course I have almost exclusively filled up at only station so my variety of pump nozzles is limited. I am in north Orange County, Kalifornikstan (I plagarized the state from another member).

I think it has to do with the end cap on the nozzle not securely sealing around the tank portal, since its like a rubber seal (or supposed to be. I had this happen the other day at a Chevron, could get the nozzle to quit tripping, saw that edge of nozzle cup/gasket wasn't seated completely around the portal (pipe). Seated it, and away we go.â›˝

I'm fly. I'm pilot.
Rotate the nozzle 180° so the hose points up.

Is it dumb? Yes. Does it work? Also yes.

I had this problem with my 2019 from the first refueling; so bad it took a real long time to fill.

My local dealer found that the filler hose assembly had been attached to the anchoring point inside the body panel with a twist...screw holes misaligned at the factory. They corrected this, and it works fine ever since.

I’m in CT. On my second fill up I put the nozzle in and started pump. Clicked off. Repositioned nozzle started pump and got barfed on by gas. Wet shoe. Repositioned nozzle and did a slow refill. Never had this happen until I had Ranger. The manual actually says insert nozzle to first notch. I have yet to see a nozzle notch. Will see next time but I think this system needs some work. At least I now know to stand back from the Ranger when pumping.
