Hello Ranger Fam,
I just picked up a 2019 Ranger with 100k miles and I’m working through the maintenance catch-up. I’ve been reading about potential carbon buildup on the 2.3L EcoBoost intake valves. At this mileage, do you recommend using a DIY spray like CRC GDI Intake Valve Cleaner, or should I go straight to a professional walnut blasting? Appreciate any advice.

If your engine idles smoothly, I wouldn't worry about cleaning the valves. They are probably ok.

No one has shown it is necessary on a Ranger. Or at least I don’t remember seeing any pictures on here. That said I’m sure somebody will post a picture of some other engine that needed it.

Agree with the sentiment that carbon buildup doesn't seem to be an issue that comes up on this forum. There was a member that did a 25k scope of his valves: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/carbon-buildup-at-25k-miles-a-short-story.21462/

But he hasn't followed up and hasn't been on the board in half a year.

If you'd like to do a treatment for peace of mind I'd do something on the DIY path for sure.
He hasnt been on because all the carbon and fuel dilution costs so much money to repair he can’t afford internet anymore.

Dont do sprays the crap can get into your turbo and cats. The hot side of the compressor is very robust and would probably be fine, but the catalyst material is not so strong. Plus they can get clogged in extreme circumstances. Walnut blast and vacuum out is the safest way.

Im at 125k and might consider it next year when I crest over 150k.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to do the service, but I would recommend the professional side of things being done. A Ford Dealer should have the tools to do it right.

I'd say remove a spark plug and stick a scope in there first to check it out.

Hard to get a decent look at the back of the valves. Probably need to go through the TB or another port on the intake manifold to get a good look. Could check for head gasket issues in the spark plug hole tho, really stop your self from sleeping at night.

122k, 10k oic with amsoil 5w30 signature series and amsoil filter, tuned since new.

I sprayed a cleaner through the intake at 70k, before I knew it was a bad idea, didn't notice any difference. My mpg have been pretty consistent.
