Are there any good options to replace the inside of the tailgate that aren't ridiculous price? I'm aware of the Mountain Hatch panel but I can't afford $260 for a novelty.

I'd be ok if the option only replaced the access panel for the tailgate Handle. I've just had a times where it would be really nice to have a flat surface to work on.

That's a decent option. Not a perfectly flat work surface, but has the added benefit of protecting the tailgate... and doesn't cost a ridiculous amount.

What exactly do you intend to do on it?
ABS plastic sheets will be a great option if you don't plan on slamming cinder blocks across it.

Easy to cut, and can be attached via adhesives(glue/3M tape) or screwed on if you're good at measuring...

Amazon has cheaper options, but most I've seen are 10x10 or 20x20".

That's not a bad thought!

HDPE sheets are available. Here is a quick example from Home Depot.

Honestly it will depend on how much you are willing to spend. I myself went with the Hurricane Fabrication tailgate storage. Reason for.me was the lack of storage under the rear seat(still can't figure out why Ford did that). In general it was nice but also made the tailgate a bit heavier. If you simply plan to leave the tailgate as it is even with a different plate o wouldn't even bother.

This is a great way to go.

If you’re handy, have the proper tools, some skills, a good work space, and a ton of patience, you could fabricate something really nice.
