I guess this is a ymmv kind of thing. I put 91 in Shelly with no improvements plus my gas mileage dropped rather significantly

I had tried 91 a couple of times before and didn't notice a difference. This time, the majority of my 91 tank was while towing, but the two 93 tanks really felt different.

I may have to try and find 93, I can't recall ever seeing it here in Houston

Ford does not recommend premium except for towing, but it sure runs great on the expensive stuff.

Page 148 of your owners manual would disagree with this statement.

For best overall vehicle and engine
performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended.

It's well known that Ford EcoBoosts use an octane adjustment ratio to alter timing for a given fuel.

This is why your manual states that 87 is REQUIRED and 91 is RECOMMENDED.

About a month ago, I needed to do some towing, and my tank was nearly empty. I went to a Casey's nearby and found that they had 93 octane available with 10% Ethanol, so I filled up my tank. I drove around quite a bit before I rented the trailer, and I noticed that the Ranger seemed to really love that gas. The engine was noticeably smoother and more responsive.

I needed to refill the tank while towing the trailer home, and the best I could find at the time was 91 octane. It seemed fine, too. Once that tank was empty, I went to my local Costco and saw that their 93 octane was only 40 cents more than their 87 octane, so I went with the premium again.

Once again, the Ranger drove much better on this gas. I have had many vehicles in the past that have recommended premium fuel only but seemed to run just as well on lower octane fuels, but the Ranger is the opposite; Ford does not recommend premium except for towing, but it sure runs great on the expensive stuff.

So I am now a convert. It is 93 only for me from now on!

I guess this means that I should go ahead and buy a tune, too, since I have now convinced myself that premium is worth the money. ?

Same exact experience (minus towing) I had with the 2.0 liter Bronco Sport, which I traded in last week for a XLT Tremor.

Haven’t tried premium in the Ranger yet. Overall, it drives much better on 87 than the Bronco ever did, but I’m afraid to try. I know I’ll like it too much.

Don't local airports or drag strips sometimes sell that crazy 100+ octane stuff? Can our vehicles use that sort of stuff? I'd want to do it just out of pure dumb curiosity.

When I worked at an airport as a mechanic, the fuel was high octane but it was leaded.

When I was Karting my class exclusively ran VP98, but I think most if not all "race fuels" are leaded.

Check your local motoX track or competitive Karting track.

Although even if it's leaded, I'd bet the factory OAR has a limit. A tune will be needed to take advantage.

Premium ran much better in my Ranger than regular - I switched to premium after about 6k miles.

This helped me to justify the worse mpg when I traded the Ranger in on a new 5.3L V8 Silverado. 3 mpg less but I use Regular again now.

I stopped using premium when you know who got in office an the price shot up 2 bucks a gallon. When that happened it seems the increase between grades went up too. It used to be around 30 cents a gal more for plus an 60 cents for premium. Now it's 50-60 cents for plus an 90 to a buck for premium. I run plus now. I know it's only like 15 bucks a tank but fifty a tank feels a little easier to take that 65.

A place near me had E88 with 15% ethanol for $1.99 a gallon. I filled up at a quarter tank to try it. The truck doesn't seem to drive any different but I'm showing about a mile a gallon less avg mpg than before. The previous avg was over several tanks since resetting an had a lot more highway miles on it than this tank. I'm showing 19.8 for mostly local commuting with very little highway so it may be pretty close to the same too. I calibrated the MPG an it's usually within .3 MPG when tracking by hand. I might try adding half a tank of the E88 an the rest plus. I never bothered with the stuff when it was 30 or 40 cents a gal cheaper than regular but it was $1.50 cheaper so that was worth giving it a shot. Not sure if it's going to stay this much cheaper though.
