Doug, I was just talking to my friend back east about this earlier today. His (well it's his wife's) Bronco finally has a build date of 5/26 and he's afraid it's going to end up sitting for months after waiting for chips. He said he'd even pay to have it covered so it's not sitting there in the elements for months. I know most do sit like this on dealers lots but when it's a brand new customer order this shouldn't be happening.

As far as the model years I'm guessing if you have a '21 and get it in '22 you're just happy to get it. Sucks it's a year old now but at least it was price protected and there was no increase.
If I were in that situation I'd gladly pay for some protection. At least on a lot they are periodically hosed off.

I've bought some outging model year new vehicles before, never bothered me. But trying to be happy about picking up a "new" '21 in September of '22 while paying (often times nowadays) more than MSRP would be tough for me.

Saw this on the Bronco forum but seeing as the Ranger is also made there I'm sure it pertains to them too. Not a good sign those waiting for chips, Ford just pushed everyone out another 60 days into July & August! o_O Some have been sitting for months now and one guys was built on 1/14 and his new date is 7/29.

Why are others getting built and shipped while these are sitting for months?

Holy crap!!! I just watched that video from this thread and that's really sobering. I'm super lucky to have gotten mine in a reasonable time, it kind of makes up for it being nearly the most base model you can get.

BUT it still makes me feel badly for everyone waiting and that really stinks for so many.

Here's the link to that same video if you're seeing this thread for the first time. It was also amazing to read that 53,000 vehicles are built but waiting on a chip!

lol You beat me by like 2 seconds posting the same link.

Yeah it's really sickening seeing all this over and over with no relief in sight. Every couple months they tell us things are looking better yet we see these vehicles piling up again.

Thank God that I listened to the sales man when he said "mavericks are going to be hard to get, come talk to me about a ranger." I go in on a Saturday, he sits me down and we begin a local search. After 10mins his manager calls him over, they talk and he walks back to me.

"I got two rangers coming in on Tuesday. Both are xlt... One is already sold. I'll call you Tuesday and hold the truck till you come in. We can take 2k off the msrp... Are you interested?"

Hell Ya i was interested.. I really had no choice. My 06 civic got totaled and there was nothing else out there and if there was.. There were huge markups.

Here's a video just taken the other day. Look at all these Broncos and some Rangers just sitting there. First they had dirt mountain then ice mountain and now this new one.

Link if the video doesn't play.

Thanks for the alternate link, it works on my old Android tablet but that's a wacky character in the link. Maybe my older tablet has fewer chips and just ignores it! =p

As much as I love my 50 year old FJ40 and that I've always been able to fix it myself, I'm not enjoying the gruelling, lay on the ground, mechanical work anymore.

I am enjoying the check out of the new Ranger and despite my old man grumbling about computers and chips, it sure runs smoother and stronger than my old FJ ever did.

At least we are building several chip plants now here in the states. IIRC there's 2-3 very large ones going up here in AZ now and a couple on the east coast. A little to late (but better late than never) and I hope we've learned a valuable lesson from all this dependency on China and other foreign nations but somehow I doubt it.
No we have not learned anything.

My opinion. The car companies are loving this. They are making extreme profits in every car sold. I haven't seen many cars around here that have sold for less than sticker. And some are selling for over sticker. Not to mention the price of used ones. And they aren't paying for inventory. They keep trickling out a few cars at a time to keep price up. They can't afford to have all those new cars flood the market.
How can companies "love" the fact that they have thousands of vehicles sitting in holding lots that they can't sell? And have to stop production on some models because they can't get parts? I don't think they're loving any part of this.

I work with a guy who lives in Michigan and he has a friend that works at Ford. So take this with a grain of salt because who knows how accurate this is.

He said that Ford has a team that gets chips and goes out to evaluate vehicles to put them in. They check for rodent damage on the wiring and any other issues (I suppose body damage or anything like that affects it all).

They then decide the best vehicles to put the chips in that will then be ready to ship.

I thought about this and it makes sense. If you have two same trucks and a chip to complete one of them, you'll do the one that will be good to go when your done.

That kind of sticks to think about but "might" explain why some truck sit around longer than others.

I don't know, but what I do know is that I don't like that for anyone's special order truck =(

I say that because they can and are demanding over sticker price on every vehicle they sell. Dealers aren't having to pay inventory. Here is the car. This is the price. Take it or leave it. Now once all those vehicles that have been sitting for months hit the market, might be a different story.

I really would like a new bronco 2 door with the squatch package and manual trans, but reading this thread gives me the hives.

I've ordered, or tried ordering, three vehicles in my life pre-covid. Never received any of the three as I gave up the wait. 2 Chevrolet and 1 Ford. So basically twice, 1 Ford and 1 Chevrolet, the dealer took a deposit and after 3-5 months admitted that they didn't have allocation for the vehicle and it wasn't actually "ordered" as they had been telling me. The one Chevrolet dealer that had allocation for the third scenario couldn't get the order entered because of one option I selected. After 4 months of waiting for GM to accept the order with my specified configuration, I got the deposit back and vowed to never order a vehicle again.

I share this because I wonder how many people have "ordered" a vehicle recently through a dealer that doesn't even have allocation to officially order the vehicle and are just sitting on the customers deposits.

I think the vehicle supply issue will continue for a little while. And saw this in a CNBC article today (not a big mainstream news follower, but this is what most people are reading .

" The low availability of vehicles, including EVs, has been driven in part by by supply chain problems – most notably a shortage of semiconductor chips since early 2021 – that have led automakers to idle plants, leaving fewer cars and trucks available for consumers. Cox Automotive reports the supply of all new vehicles at the end of April was down 40% from the same period a year earlier to 1.13 million unsold cars and trucks. That’s about 800,000 vehicles below supply in April 2021 and 2.2 million below 2020.... But given the tight supplies and growing demand, analysts say people should expect to pay the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, if not more. Pricing excludes any state or federal tax incentives that might be available for buying an EV."

I think I read somewhere else the average used car age was now more than twelve (12) years old. I mean, I just sold my 2010, and I sold it form $6K (Kelly Blue Book) with it needing $4k in repairs.
