Used Quaker State + Fram for the first 50k miles. My store nearby stopped carrying QS so I switched to Blended Castrol White bottle. I change every 5k-6k miles and it’s been fine. 110k now

Hello everyone,

I'm a new owner of a 2019 Ford Ranger 5G and am looking for advice on what type of engine oil to use for my car. I looked through the owner's manual, but also wanted to get recommendations from those who have direct experience with this model one of my friends suggested me to use a high performance 5W-30 but i'm not sure if it's a good oil for my car engine, i'm not going to use it without consulting you first. I want to make sure of using the engine oil that best suits its needs so if you have a Ford Ranger 5G or have knowledge of the types of engine oil that are compatible with this model, I would appreciate any suggestions or advice you may have to offer. I want to make sure I take care of my car in the best way possible, and choosing the right motor oil is an important step in that process.
Thank you in advance for your help and advice. I look forward to reading your responses and making an informed decision on choosing engine oil for my Ford Ranger 5G.
I’ve used Costco’s Kirkland brand 5/30 full synthetic for 55k miles. That, and K&N oil filters.
If the previous owner used regular oil, stay with that. The seals and gaskets will last longer. If they used Synthetic, you should too.

congratulations on your purchase- great little truck!

These are the results from Project Farm when he tested some of the oils. Might help with your decision.

Anybody remember when they sold recycled oil? Used to see it at Wal-Mart.

I don't over think it, I just let the dealer do it.
I had the dealer do the first oil change at 3000 miles (the "Works" plus paid the extra $30 for upgrade to full synthetic) and since go every 4500 - 5000 miles for the same thing. Since I only put about 4500 miles on a year, that's once a year for me. Full synthetic.

Asking about what oil (or fuel) to use on any vehicle forum ALWAYS opens a fire storm because everyone has their own ideas about what it best. In truth it depends upon how long you expect to keep your truck. Every time I've bought a vehicle I always say - "I'm going to keep it until the wheels fall off." Deep down I know that's a lie. Are you saving it for the next guy. Doesn't make sense to your pocket book. Maintain it for how long you intend to keep it, but be honest with yourself.

Because your truck has a turbo and start/stop, I would recommend a pure synthetic, not because it necessarily lubes better, but it gets to where it's supposed to be quicker, it sticks better, and is resistant today's high engine temperatures. The turbo in your truck spins at about 50,000RPM at idle and about 200,000RPM at wide open. With S/S when you pull up to a stop - say after a highway drive - the engine shuts down to save a little fuel, thereby shutting off the oil supply and water cooling to the turbo. Long term there is no way that can be good for the life of the turbo.

One more thing. If you let the dealer do your oil changes be sure and ask what kind of oil they use. Nine times out of 10 they will automatically say synthetic. Ask if it pure synthetic or blend. Usually it's blend. You want full synthetic, not blend.

As someone said - The Youtuber at "Project Farm" does some pretty good testing which will also help you decide.

My theory is to put in the Ford recommended oil while it's under warranty. After that I'll be changing to Mobil1 Synthetic.

I’ve been using Mobil 1 full synthetic for years. I changed to WIX filters after an issue with a Ford filter with this vehicle. As one of commenters said earlier, we have developed our favorites for one reason another and we are prone to debate the issue way beyond any real data. A name brand full synthetic oil and filter (not Fram) and you’ll be fine.
Why the "Not Fram" point? Do you have a bad experience with them? Anecdotally, I've used them for 10 years with no trouble.

I use a Wix or Motorcraft filter and the cheapest name brand full synthetic at the auto parts store, usually whatever is on special.

Love that according to Project Farm Wally Mart oil ranked about the same as some higher priced brews from the likes of Mobil 1 , Quaker State and Royal Purple - never bought any royal purple but isn't that sh*t really expensive. Wally Mart is my go to brand for yrs, not an oil snob.

I would also highly recommend grabbing this. Put it on a ratchet extension and it makes the job take about 5 seconds. I bought it after 4 annoyingly difficult oil changes.

I have this (Harbor Freight version) and really hate it due to the location of the filter and how hard it is getting it to grab on. I switched to a Lisle 63600 which has spring tension to hold it on the filter.

That spring one looks nice. I had no trouble getting my walmart one to grip to the filter, as you rotate counter clockwise, it seemed to just naturally grip it without much fuss.
