These plugs have only been in the truck for 2 weeks / 100 miles. The left plug has already oxidized terribly and from that back #4 cylinder. The previous plug was in standing muddy water (coil boot and channel was submerged for some reason) but this time was bone dry.

Any thoughts on what's happening here?

If you told me a buddy drove your truck off the dock in Portsmouth and the truck set for 2 years before they got the salt water out of that spark plug well, I would say, "yeah, 2 years in a salt bath sounds right..."

2 weeks? You got something mighty corrosive down in that spark plug well.

salt corrosion from splashing around on the beach or something possibly car wash sprayers. id change the plug and wire and re check it after a few weeks. if its rusty and crusty again id be shocked seeing as how you already have the engine cover.

I noticed with mine (have collector engine cover) over time a fine dusting of dirt covers the entire engine compartment. If I did have water intrusion you would see evidence of that on the engine cover. Stripes of where water ran off would be evident.

I would also suggest since you have plugs removed to put some no seize nickel grease on the threads. This will keep plugs from galvanic welding into the head. Seeing you already have corrosion beginnings as evident in your photo.

A piece of split pipe insulation will do a much better job at deflecting the water BEFORE it drips on the engine than the sponge that Ford recommends you bolt on there ...
Till I get to Lowes for some rubber split insulation, I had some of the foam stuff and tried it.
Works very well, and stays on without any adhesive...
For info, it's the insulation for 1/2 inch pipe.

Nice, I'll pick this next next hardware store trip!
I'm doing a "honey-doo" run today and am going by Lowes to pick up the rubber typs split insulation...it's black and I think it will look and work better than the foam.
Will take pics when done.
Hat's off to NotBudule for the idea...

And for 100 miles of run time, there sure was a lot of heat to discolor the insulator.

Here's the rubber pipe insulation for 1/2 inch pipe. Same as the foam but softer. Also has "sticky" on the edges that meet and it adheres very well to the plastic cowl.
If you go this route, peel off bottom tape and wrap it over the cowl edge, and then peel off top edge tape. If you remove both, the edges will stick together before you can slip it over the cow edge.

I washed my truck at the car wash yesterday, so when finishing up, I decided to see if any water got on top of the engine.

it was very bright outside so not 100%, but it looked like the engine cover doesn’t keep water from getting down into number 4 plug. It looks like the water can drip straight down and misses the cover.

I will double check but I wouldn’t be buying a cover to solve the water intrusion issue until someone confirms it actually shields water from number 4.

It's not just about water diversion, it's the massive infusion of horse power the cover adds.......:like:
