The fact that the combination of these two statements is true about many things related to GM in the past couple decades is a major factor in my extreme hesitancy to buy any of their products.
It seems GM statement any time they have a problem is "It's with in acceptable limits"

GM lineup is not a threat to the 2019 Ford Ranger. Ford, is a threat to itself with its F-150 competing with the Ford Ranger. Next time, when you are at a Ford dealership observe how many XL trim models the dealer has on the lot. I will give you a hint - zero. The reason, I was told, at MSRP of $24,300 for the basic plain Jane XL trim model, it could easily erode the fat profits the F-150 provides for Ford Motor Company. :sunglasses:
Dealers stock what sells. If there was a big demand for bare bones XLs on the lot they would stock them. Most of those $24,300 XLs are going to GSA or commercial fleets. The same is true with F150 XLs although you do find quite a few XL STX packaged F150s on the lots. The fact is once the buyers see the nice trim, infotainment system, nice wheels, etc. that’s what they want. If you really want a basic no options XL any dealer will order you one. Very few people are ordering them for personal use.

I predict a decent but not record-breaking quarter for the Ranger.......They will release 2nd qtr results in July. With 78K Tacomas sold and a crapload of Colorados sold, I have to wonder how large the market for these small pickups is. Maybe Ford is a tad late to the party for 2019. After it's been out for a few years (with limited TSBs and recalls), it may be the goto truck again.

However, I don't see 78K Tacoma buyers or 40K Colorado buyers trading anytime soon . Toyota, if nothing else, develops fanbois with each sale.

Not so much for Ford. I cannot consider myself a fan of ANY manufacturer. I buy the best vehicle in the class at the time I buy it. For me, in 2019 it's the Ranger. In three years maybe the Tacoma will improve and be my go to.

Never become beholden to any Car maker. They will all disappoint sooner or later.
Good advice. I'm a Ford fan, but not fanatic. I've had very good luck with Ford products for the last 20+ years, but if I didn't like what they were building when I was looking for a new vehicle, I wouldn't have a problem buying something that worked better for me. So far, they have satisfied my needs well and I've not had significant issues with any of our vehicles. But I don't replace vehicles every 3 years anymore - last Ranger I had for 14 years, last Explorer we had for over 10.

I did not check out the Colorado/Canyon when I was looking for this pickup - my brother has a Cruze diesel and has had a LOT of sensors, etc fail in it. The only thing he says he loves about it is the mileage (and it is really good) and the power from the turbo diesel. His son had a Cruze diesel as well and his was in the shop a dozen or more times with all sorts of issues with the entertainment system (which messed up things unrelated to entertainment). So, based on that anecdotal evidence I decided to skip the GM products. For me I quickly pared it down to either a Ranger or a Tacoma.

June sales numbers should be interesting.

cut GM some slack. They've only been trying to fix that POS for 4 years.
The problem goes back way longer than four years! My 2005 Colorado was lemon-lawned after 8 months because of the transmission. I was at the dealer every month because of the transmission. The service manage finally told me there was nothing wrong with the transmission and go to another dealer after the six months of trying to fix the transmission misshifts and terrible clucking they said couldn't be replicate. Two days later the transmission blew up second and third gears gushing out all the transmission fluid on a busy interstate. Within the month the state of Texas ordered GM to buy the vehicle back. That ended my Chevy experiment and came back to Ford. Won’t ever go back to a GM product.

This has always been GMs attitude. They also held 40-50% of the entire automobile market from the 1950s until the early 80s. Today their market share hovers around 17%. Ford generally had around 25% +/- during that 50s to early 80s historical period. Today Ford's market share is around 14%. Although they both have lost a lot of market share over the past 50 years, the decline of GM is HUGE compared to Ford.

This attitude of we are the best and don't really worry about the competition hasn't really worked for them. Heck last I checked the Silverado is now in 3rd place behind the Ram for full sized pickups. It might take a few years, but the Ranger could easily take out the Colorado/Canyon in sales if Ford wants it to happen.
a few years? I'm thinking Ranger out sells BOTH GM trucks combined at the end of 2020.

If they want to outsell them, I think they will need to at least add another shift (or two) to the existing one. They currently don't make enough to outsell them. do they? They are running 10 hour shifts 6 days a week as I recall, and they are doing approximately 500 a day - that is 12,000 a month. Aren't the GM twins sales higher than that?

I traded my 2015 Colorado in for the Ranger and I am happy with the ranger . only 2 complaints from the Ranger so far
# 1 there is more noise coming from the rear seat side doors then there was in the Colorado
# 2 I miss the bumper steps at the corners but I installed a step on the driver side below the bumper corner . works great !

there are way more + on the ranger then the Colorado and both are the lower end models

1 good thing was ford gave me $ 3,500 less then I paid for it when it was new ( Colorado ) the dealer that has it now wants more for it then it cost me in 2015 when it was new ???

Woody,
What did you find for a step that fits the Ranger?

Thanks

The Ranger won't hurt the Tacoma much but I think Colorado will lose a good amount of sales.
The '20 Frontier will be a new generation. We'll see what sales are with that model.

It's impossible to tell what the future holds. Ford let the Ranger stagnate in a changing market and fell way behind the curve. When the Ranger left the market, it was the smallest truck in the US.

Tacoma was the underdog truck to the reigning king Ranger about 20 years ago. Maybe the complacency of the Gen3 Tacoma will cause a shift, even though it seems bullet proof now. I just hope that the Ranger is a good enough performer to stay on the market. If it can hang, and if the (supposedly) coming Frontier update comes through, the mid-size market will be a very interesting place in the next few years.

They will go to two shifts once the Bronco comes on-line.

But won't that be just for Bronco production? Or are they going to build Rangers and Broncos at the same time? I know they sit on the same platform - or will. One shift produces Rangers and the next shift produces Broncos?

Maybe those are silly questions - I really have no idea - just that if they want to produce more to approach Tacoma levels they will need to add more capacity. I don't know what the targets are.

Supposedly some of the limitations are in areas that will be shared with bronco production, so they won't put the money into expanding those until they're ready to add the bronco tooling. There will be separate lines, but some things (e.g., paint? post-build addons like bedliners or running boards?) will be shared.

I used this as a base and made my own mounting bracket off the rear bumper mount driver side . works amazing and is lower then the bumper step was on the Colorado . I installed it so it is the same level as the trailer hitch . I can pull the release and it will swivel to the left so I can stand on with the gate up or flip it to the far right so it is out of the way .

I can't get past those stupid looking squarish wheel wells on the Colorado and Canyon. They changed the full size trucks but then they are built in Mexico so I can't get past that since they could have retooled Lordstown or several others to produce them.
