Bummer!
How does it do for water? Dust, while not ideal I can blow out periodically.
That I can't help you with. I actually can't tell you offhand the last time it rained where I am, and I didn't really have an issue with water in the past.

Somewhere in the archives of this site is a post that the poster used a rubber pipe insulator from Home Depot. With a little trimming and sealing with silicone I made a almost perfect seal. There are still holes in the bed in the front that sometimes leak water. But, with the the shell creating a vacuum at the back I still get some dust in extreme conditions. It is hard to keep the AZ dust from sneaking in. Like Phil said it is a truck.

I found the odd shaped lower corner gaps most difficult to fill. Including the gap behind the hinge plates.

Together with some closed cell foam packing blocks and weather seal from Home Depot, I used pieces from two packs of this ESI Ranger specific seal.

ESI Ultimate Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal Compatible with Ford Ranger 2019 and Newer

After several small test fittings, I ignored the instructions, then cut and installed pieces for a better fit.

I put the seals on the outer edge to keep dirt out of the latch mechanisms.

The Home Depot seal works great across the bottom except at the ends where the tailgate corners are rounded. I used the thicker blocks there.

I still have a few small holes which I may fill with caulk.

Prior to delivery, my dealer installed the Ford damperer thingee. Never cared for the way the tailgate cable gets crunched. After installing the seals on the outer edge, had to remove the damper, not enough clearance.

I've probably mentioned this before, but I put this in Sept 2020 after I "discovered" half a road trip under the hardcover ;). Since then, I have had maybe a 1/2 dixie cup of rain water (from cover seal I believe) and maybe 1/4 cup of road dirt.

So after a few months how is this solution holding up?
Still working well. Can’t comment on dust since I have not taken it off road but the only water that comes in is a small amount at the tailgate corners. All seals remain stuck in place. WoRks for me.

It's been a few weeks since some of the postings:

How do you folks like the ESI Ultimate Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal Compatible with Ford Ranger 2019 and Newer?

And did you add the gap cover recommended by ESI for our Rangers: ESI ROK Block XL Tailgate Gap Cover 7" / 17.78cm Width - Fits All Pickups Worldwide?
I did the ESI seal and spent a good long time getting it on the way they want, but somewhere I either messed it up or it just flat out can't manage to get our tailgates relatively sealed. I still get so much dust ingress around/through the seals that it didn't make any difference. I'm tempted to get another kit and try again, but there has to be a better solution.

(not planning to take the tailgate off anytime soon, so shouldn't ever be a problem)
I replied to the other thread you asked in, this quote below covers my current issues.

I installed mine a few weeks ago, and either I *seriously* messed up the install, which is entirely possible but I was pretty vigilant because I wanted it to work, or it just doesn't work as well as I'd hoped in regards to dust, because it made almost no discernible difference in my use case :(

Found this in my search for a tailgate seal.

Not in the USA but the pictures help. Also notice the struts are installed.

There have been more than one of us reaching out to the Aussies for inquiry’s about these. Not one of us has heard anything back. That’s over the last 6 months. Who knows, it just might be your day! From what I have seen they’re pretty pricey though

I recently installed the ESI seal on my 2021 Lariat to accompany my Gator EFX tri-fold tonneau cover. A rather odd combination of pieces around the bottom corners of the tailgate but it seems to be effective. The most challenging part is along the sides as there is a very tight margin to obtain an effective seal without the side of the tail light causing the material to roll. I ended up supplementing the side seal piece on the tail gate with a couple pieces of 1/4" black foam window molding along the inside of the tail light lenses. The ESI piece presses back against it and makes a good seal. I also put a tiny bit of black sealant on each end of the short piece filling the hinge hole on each side.

I think with my small tweaks it's pretty watertight. Ran it through the pressure washer and there was no trace of moisture in the bed. I haven't detected any dust intrusion either, though I haven't yet given it a rigorous test.

Is this the product or is that a special Taper Seal kit for the Ranger?
https://www.amazon.ca/Ultimate-Tailgate-Seal-Taper-Seal®/dp/B00IPQWXZQ

UPDATE: found it:
https://www.amazon.ca/ESI-Ultimate-Tailgate-Taper-Ranger/dp/B07YF5BL8M

UPDATE: it arrived from Amazon. I installed it. The instructions are good. It is a fussy place to seal up, as others have said. Especially hard getting just the right seal distance on the two vertical sides of the tailgate. That has nothing to do with this seal kit, just the way the truck is made. I ended up with a 1/32" gap on one side. I will add some window seal the way Gil-galad described above if it leaks too much. Haven't tested it yet.

How about a solution that will only cost just over $3!

Some of you may laugh, but I was fed up with the “seals” that just don’t work for our tailgates. I had a thought that perhaps pipe insulation with the adhesive strip could work.

After several months in place, I am happy to tell you, that while it is not sexy, it actually does work quite well. I had to replace a small strip today so figured I would take pics and share. It should even work for those with dampers. ?

Install is simple enough.
  • Clean the area well
  • Cut the foam about 1” higher than the bed wall
  • Cut the tube in half
  • Pre-fit and trim as needed
  • To fill the gap better at the bottom, cut a second section a bit higher than the lower part of the tail light, cut in half
  • Pre-fit and trim to the area
  • Attach
As you see, the foam will compress to the tailgate. May take a bit to fit right so cut large and pre-fit. Cheap and easy and the adhesive does not seem to harm the paint. Best solution I have found yet.
