I've been thinking of doing something similar with some refrigerated cooler door seal, but haven't yet spent time trying to figure out how to get it put in.How about a solution that will only cost just over $3!
Some of you may laugh, but I was fed up with the “seals” that just don’t work for our tailgates. I had a thought that perhaps pipe insulation with the adhesive strip could work.
After several months in place, I am happy to tell you, that while it is not sexy, it actually does work quite well. I had to replace a small strip today so figured I would take pics and share. It should even work for those with dampers. ?

Install is simple enough.
As you see, the foam will compress to the tailgate. May take a bit to fit right so cut large and pre-fit. Cheap and easy and the adhesive does not seem to harm the paint. Best solution I have found yet.
- Clean the area well
- Cut the foam about 1” higher than the bed wall
- Cut the tube in half
- Pre-fit and trim as needed
- To fill the gap better at the bottom, cut a second section a bit higher than the lower part of the tail light, cut in half
- Pre-fit and trim to the area
- Attach
I'm of the opinion as long as it works, it doesn't need to be purty.
