Well I got my new to me work van yesterday(2022 Transit Cargo) and it's pretty nice in the package area. It even has Factory Navigation. But I have to ask since I'm was out of the Ford game for a bit. When did Ford start requiring you to pay a Subscription to even use the Navigation?! To specify you can't even search an address unless you have the subscription....... You can look at the map, but thats it.........

Not my experience Frenchy, on my 2020 Ranger, navigation works well. The map is getting a bit out of date but not enough for me to pay for the update yet.

I'm almost wondering if it's a Sync 4 thing........ As for the 5th gen Ranger, I believe those were all Sync 3.

Possibly, mine is Syn 3. I would not be happy if I had to paid for nav (other than map updates).

I'm with you on that. I know I'm not the only one who's getting tired of manufacturers church and subscriptions for options on a vehicle. If the option is there then I should be able to use it. The only exceptions would be Sirius XM radio and Sirius XM travel link for traffic updates. I call BS unsubscription for navigation itself and heated seats along with other similar things.

I never use the factory Nav and use either Google Maps or Apple Maps. They update regularly and there's no charges and personally I feel they're much better than most factory Nav. These subscriptions are getting out of hand just like tipping. Now everyone has their hand out for a tip (most for just doing their job at the counter) and it's almost common to see them now on every establishments tablets. :curse::angry:

Sorry, rant over. 😜

I upgraded mine last year. I was traveling through Canada and felt I might need it.
It was for Sync 3 on the Ranger. I would suggest getting the Ford USB stick as the digital download took me 3 tries and over 2 hours. The cost around $110.00

I‘ve seen it on the checkout page of an online retailer. Out of control. :(

21st century tipping tips:
  • If you have to pay for the meal before you receive it, no tip.
  • If you have to stand while ordering your meal, no tip
  • If you are ordering from a vehicle, no tip.
  • If your meal comes in a box and/or bag, no tip
A tip is supposed to be for exceptional service, not added compensation.
When I had hair, I used to tip my barber. He was a retired Navy machinist and would cut hair onboard his ship. He bought the shop from a barber that opened it in the 40s. It had "jet age" Naugahyde barber chairs with ashtrays in the armrests and he'd trim sideburns and nape of your neck with a straight razor. The warm shave cream from the dispenser and the feel of the razor was worth the tip.

Anyway

I usually tip tour guides if they know the subject well and are engaging. Cabbies (not Ubers) get tipped in cash, the fare by credit or debit card.

Getting out of date? I haven't updated the map in my Ranger, but it was almost 20 years out of date when it was built. Tried to take me down a road one time that I know for a fact was closed in the early 2000s

My daddy was a barber, and I remember all that stuff from my youth. Also the leather "strop" hanging from the chairs idea that he used to keep an edge on the razor. The elder barbers there used to also use a lit wooden match to "singe" the hair ends on some of their customers' flat top haircuts. Combs kept in jars of disinfectant...and sometimes the shaving cream was out of a cup and applied with a soft brush.
Also had a shoeshine chair with an elderly man that shined shoes while you wait for your haircut. He also kept the floor swept up during the day.

Geez, the memories you just brought up for me!

That's the way to do it. I don't think the factory nav does traffic conditions where Apple, Google, Waze, etc. can warn you and reroute as needed. Sometimes new places don't get added quickly, though. Where I work showed up on google and apple but wasn't in the right spot and waze didn't show it at all until I added it last month. We've been open since February of last year. You'd think google and waze would share that info, waze being owned by google

By itself the Sync 3 will not and technically requires the Sirius XM Travel Link Traffic to get it. That has been going on for a while since around 2010 I believe for many vehicles. If anything you could still type in an address and navigate to it without a subscription.

What I'm bitching about is not even being able to navigate to a specific address without the subscription. From what I can tell with Sync 4 you are required to pay for that feature even though the vehicle came equipped with Navigation. To say the least it is very frustrating.

I'm getting pretty good at hijacking this thread! Here goes: We recently took a road trip to the Black Hills, and one of the places we had never visited was the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, SD-facinating museum, BTW. We Hey Siri-ed the directions to Apple Car Play and it proceeded to bring us thru a residential neighborhood to the rear of a large building with a couple loading docks. There was a sign at the gate saying something like, "We're sorry. Your GPS has brought you to the back of the Mammoth Site. Please follow the map below to the visitor parking lot."
