Cold Air Intake Comparisons?

I'm not interested in a tune with a meter and more buttons.
I really don't want to race or push this truck over the envelope for performance.
I just wanted a truck that did better then how I bought it. I don't care about the noise level, or the sound of power. I don't want to turn the drive into a job.
I did the Flowmaster cat back and just put the Roush CAI on the Ranger. It may not meet the dollar for hp, nor the max gained by over investing in re-inventing the eco boost engine...
But...I did get a more responsive truck and it's made me think I got what I wanted.
Everybody has their goals. For the regular guy, who's not an automotive genius, I think I did OK.
These were simple fixes, and I think they are useful. If I wanted a truck that will create its own slip stream...I would have bought one.

I just do the math. The dollar per horsepower / torque of a tune is a far better value than that of a CAI.
Good thing I’ve already got a tune.

I installed the Roush intake before installing the Roush tune. It definitely made a noticeable difference to me in performance. Not like its a neck breaking increase but it was noticeable.

It doesn't just modify the air box, but the air box pipe is changed to one that is smooth walled compared to the corrugated pipe that is OEM.

And for whoever is saying its louder, I have heard no actual sound change whatsoever even with the windows down.

FOr the $400 cost.. i dunno really. You can tell this is a 10,000% markup for what you actually are physically getting.

Isn't Ford including a K&N replacement filter using the original air box with the performance tune kit? I think that says it all; if I am correct.

That's what I have read.
If you replace the restrictions of the pipes, upgrade the airbox...you have essentially bought the tune. I'm not sure if these are additive...but it will make a difference.

At Levittown Ford, the intake is a bit over $300 while the Ford Performance Kit that includes the Roush intake is a bit over $700, so you're effectively getting the tune for only $400.

I (and my wife) hate myself when I can justify spending a lot to save a little...:devil:

Exactly! I always make sure my mods are justified by the "better mpg" and "more better than OEM" argument. ?

I did get the Roush intake and tune from Levittown, it was an excellent deal...

100% accurate! Plug it in, download and put the tuner away. Simple and a huge improvement in performance, shifting, overall driveability and for my my MPG went up.

However....to each their own! They are our trucks and our money! Spend it as you see fit!

This statement is not really accurate:

The Roush intake system is ≈$350 depending on where you're located (shipping costs vary).

The Ford Performance unit, is just under $650, again depending on where you live. it DOES NOT include the Roush intake unit! It is, however, shipped with a K&N replacement filter, replacing the Ford factory-supplied, paper element.

The question remains does the Roush unit actually increase power? Yes it does. But using the stock tune, it is less than 10 HP, best case, depending on the outside temperature. You can decide for yourself, if it is worth the expense.

The Ford marketed, Borla exhaust system is another iffy unit. With a stock tune, it does deliver a modest top end improvement, of about 12 HP. In my opinion, it sound better, and gets rid of the "pop-pop-pop" sound of the stock exhaust. And, if is two pipes past the muffler, not one.

With the Ford Performance tune, I really can't say, because I didn't dyno all of the possible configuration changes. All said and done, with the Ford Performance tune, added to the Roush intake system, and the Ford-marketed, Borla exhaust system, you get right at 345 peak HP, and 395 FP torque (corrected to sea level), which is a big improvement! My 0 to 60, at 3,550' altitude, is right at 6 seconds, at an ambient of 80°. That is roughly equivalent to 5.4 seconds at sea level.

Apologies, my mistake.

It was the Roush Performance Pac that included the Roush CAI for $721.

The Ford Performance Kit with the K&N filter is $621.

But the previous comment that was in error does make a better argument for justifying it with the wife :devil:

Velossatech is only doing a ramair piece that mounts behind the grille which directs air up into the intake tract. My truck has the prototype on it which fits amazing and once we can get the finished product on I'm sure it will be pretty quick to market. I asked him if he would do a piece replacing the factory piece that pulls air into the airbox....and he told me no as it is not in his business model. Which I completely understand sticking to one need in the aftermarket world.
My only interest in the VT would be some other tangible advantage then... lower intake temp or some measured increase in air density. It's going to be tough to quantify.

The Mishimoto intake horn is larger/smoother than the stocker, but it all still relies on that opening in the engine compartment shroud.

Doesn't really matter if someone believes these add performance or if they do not, that is open for debate. Stock vehicles, maybe not, but for modified vehicles yes. I have one of these on my truck and they are engineered very well and provide greater filtering and flow capacity and that is always a plus. Regardless, they look great! If you are after increased sounds, remove the clear cover and you'll find it
You have the Roush CAI?

Got that one...the video (Mishi) left some disturbing unknowns about the reason for mechanicals in the stock box. But, with that said....all have the basic performance increase.
