Those I'm more diligent about changing. We run our AC 6-7 months here so I change them out every 30 days. I just had a new unit installed last year so it's cheap insurance for keeping the coils clean. You're right those get dirty fast which is surprising since the windows are closed and we have no pets. With all that's going on in life I now set a recurring monthly reminder on my phone so I don't forget.
This is one of the 4 inch thick ones, so they are 25 a piece! Used to change my 1/2 think ones spring and fall.

My HVAC company (and several others) said not to waste money on expensive filters. They actually do more harm than good because they restrict air flow. Just get the cheap 3 pk pleated filters from Lowe's and change them out every 30 days. I figure they're the ones who know best and are warrantying it (labor & materials) so I'll listen to them. My friend bought one of those metal washable reusable filters for like $75.00 and ended up throwing it out as his HVAC guy (different from mine) told him the same thing.

It's been a long time (but it doesn't seem like it for people who remember carberateurs) since cars didn't have cabin air filters.
This is the first vehicle I've owned with one although the wife has had a few.
I had two Sport Tracs previously and thanks to the generic owner's manual the newbies are always asking on the boards where the cabin air filter is. Simple, there isn't one.

The 2012 Rubicon had the holder for the cabin filter (there are 2 filters placed side-by-side to fill the space) but for some reason Jeep decided not to install the filters. It was one of the first things I did.

My Trane system has an electronic air filter. No element to change. Need to clean the prefilter every so often and blow out the main filter cartidges less often. Get an alert when to clean them. My HAVC tech says everything downstream of the filter looks super clean so keep it up.

I have to admit these cabin filters are amazing. I was following a jerk in a diesel F-250, (I think) and every chance he got he rolled smoke. Not once did I get diesel fumes in the cabin.

I have had several HVAC guys here say the same. Cheap filters more often.

I had a house like that also. Need to spec that if we replace it.

Yeah I had a whole system replacement when I moved into my current house and he mentioned that nice filters put more wear on the system. How much wear it actually puts who really knows. If you get nicer filters you may have to change often as dust will clog since the filter design traps more, which is where I think the advice comes from. I noticed a difference in dust and allergies as soon as I switched from a basic free one they put in when they installed system to when I switched to a merv 11 one
