You want to talk about suffering - in the 80s I lived in C Springs and a number of us would take ski trips to the I 70 ski areas - I rode once with a guy who bought a Suzuki Samurai - horrendous pos, horribly underpowered, hellacious wind noise, cramped. Wouldn't even do 55 mph on the uphill, carburated 4 cyl engine performed like smoldering dog poo at higher elevations.
I had a samurai once. I had to take the long way home from town because the road I lived on had a 23% grade in one section, and it couldn't make it up it.

Don't think he was trying to be insulting

There is a meme. TAFFR (that's a Ford f*ckin' Ranger) because the old style was so prevalent for a while
There's also a plate...?
My wife got me a TAFFR sticker for my birthday last year...I have yet to put it on the new Ranger though.
Mines a plate ?

Phil did you ever work at Portland International Raceway when doing the Indy cars. I never missed a race for many years. Those were fun times. Pit passed and chalet passes.
Hi Mark,

Yep...Was part of the crew for a few Portland International Raceway on several occasions. Fun time. We always got a rose sticky on our hard card credential... Fly in...run a race and fly out...

best,
Phil

Hi Mark,

Maybe some day I will tell the tale of Roberto Guerrero when he ended up in his IndyCar in the parking lot of the cars of the fans in the Grandstands...

I have never understood the:
Harley vs. Foreign Motorcycle Drama
Jeep vs. Bronco Drama
Ranger vs. Toyota Drama
or...all the other Brand loyalty and brand bashing "drama". We are all on 2 wheels, lets respect each other. We are all 4X4 enthusiasts, lets respect each other and also realize that at various times in history all Brands have made crap and good vehicles.

Where am I going with this, or why?:
Today I was at the local Wally World (heh....they have my Viagra real cheap). When I was leaving and getting ready to open my door I heard a loud and aggressive male voice shout, "Fuc_in Ford Ranger". The shout came from a passing vehicle, a Nissan Frontier pickup, an older model. The voice was loud and aggressive and put me on immediate guard. The fool drove off. What a way to cause unnecessary drama, alarm or confrontation! Why?! Granted I have a cyber orange Ranger and it stands out...but the Ranger is beautiful and stands out. Was he just jealous on the inside? Probably. Asses like this do not realize that we have worked our butts off to afford our rides. These are the same jealous a-holes that vandalize our rides

I think a big round of applause is needed for our own P.A. Schilke for the engineering of the early Rangers. Those early Rangers and how there are plenty still out there is all about the "TAFFR" meme. Hat's off to Phil!
Almost daily I see older Rangers driving the roads down here. These older Rangers are approaching 20 years old so must be somewhat reliable

Hi NB,

Reminds me of my 22 years as a track side Indy Car official. Japanese driver Hiro Mashusta, rich kid of mediocre talent...Heir to the Panasonic fortune. Pensky driver, Emerson Fittipaldi continually complained about Hiro being in the way... as did other drivers.... So Emerson would key the mike in his Indycar and said that ....King Hiro just blocked me... The delay in keying the mike resulted in the truncation of the Fuc...and so Mashusta became known as King Hiro... All of us officials called Mashusta that too....King Hiro....

KingHiro.jpg

I had a few occasions in the heat of the battle to have to deal with King Hiro...first one was at Mid Ohio where he spun out and I had to respond to him....Not knowing or having delt with him before in calm circumstances, my first words were Do You Speak English? He nodded yes. So I took the wheel of his car and since it was down hill where he was I pointed him down hill. Then got on the rear wing and started pushing him...I yelled 3rd Gear and hear the transaxle click then yelled Dump the Clutch and the engine lit.. Then following my hand signals we got him back into race traffic. So there I was on track during a race....not a safe place...but made it back behind the guardrail....Such is the life of track side officials..

Best,
Phil
Phil,

The latter part of your story reminded me of the turn workers pushing on the wing of a car at the 1990 Vancouver Indy. Of the four, three were hit, and one of them died. It was such a tragedy to see and it showed just how dangerous it is to be on track during a race. Glad you made it back safely behind that guardrail.

Hi Duke,

It was a dangerous job for sure...I had my share of close calls, but what an adrenaline rush dealing with the fastest racecars on this planet. I was not in Vancouveer that year but watched on TV...The turn workers made a terrible mistake as their next move on the track was to climb the wall and fence and wait for the turn ahead of them to signal to cross the track... As a result of this unfortunate death of a relative unskilled turn worker, on street courses and road courses, turn workers were banned from venturing on the track at all...

Here is one of my stories of how to do it right, but still very dangerous...

Hi Mark,

Maybe some day I will tell the tale of Roberto Guerrero when he ended up in his IndyCar in the parking lot of the cars of the fans in the Grandstands...

best,

Okay...Roberto Story. The Cleveland Grand Prix on Burk Lakefront Airport course. I headed up the crew at Turn 11, which is a right hand turn at what we called the North 40 part of the track. Then cars came down to 11 on a short shut from 10 and then down the straight by the grand stands.

Behind Turn 11 was spectator parking in the grassy field, row after row of cars and seperated from the track by a chainlink fence. We were behind a row of 3 ton cement blocks joined together with section of "locking" poles.

Roberto lost it coming out of 10 and slid on the wet grass. He was heading straight for the fence and the parking lot...no steering or brakes would stop him on the wet grass and he hit the fence at well over 70 mph. Surprising the wedge shape of the front wing and nose of the car lifted the fence and the whole car slid into the parking lot, fortunately between two rows of cars. I ran over to the fence which slid back down and tried to get under the fence. There were three photographers there and they helped pull up the fence and I slid under on my belly...got up and ran to the car and poked my head into the cockpit. Roberto was wide eyed and bewildered. So I told him where he was and what had happened. I told him to stay in the car, switch off the electrics and wait while CART Safety arrived. The Safety team yelled at me if he was okay and I gave them a thumbs up. The the words "How the fuck did you get to the car" I told them I slid under the fence that three Photogs pulled up...So two of the safety team did the same as me.

So the three of us...me kneeling on the sidepod with my hand on the steering wheel we pushed the car back to the fence....Rest of the safety team started cutting the fence and they rolled back the fence and we pushed the car through and then forward back onto the track....Roberto was still wide eyed....shaking his helmet side to side. Then he got towed back to the pits. Car had the rear wing damaged as well as the front wing and scratches up the nose of the car, the roll hoop etc.

Then we had to wait for the fence repair crew and Race Control was there barking orders to bring more 3 ton blocks which would extend quite some more distance down the fence line.

I stopped by the garage at the end of the day...Roberto was there watching the repair on the car...He came over and we shook hands and I told him that had to be one of the weirdest things I had experienced at that time...

Best,
Phil

really.
couldn‘t you see that behavior like this is the logical consequence of the unfulfilled american dream (everyone has the same opportunities) and the american way of life (me, me, me and you are great as long as you don't get in my way)… or short: unregulated capitalism and cancel culture...
As sad as it is; mankind is on its way back to stone age. With warp speed it feels like. Humanism is just a place holder for the best next deal.

Here is the interesting thing. Just look around and notice how you see way more old Ford Rangers still running around vs. any other old compact trucks. You see more old Rangers then old Toyotas (frames probably rotted out), Nissans, and pretty much any small truck from that era. Heck you hardly ever see an S10 anymore. Those have all been hauled off to the junk yard, but old Rangers are still running all over the place.
my thesis is. The Ranger was kept of beeing a proudly american made product and the toyos and nissans have a great fanbase in the middle east and africa…

Great thread. Appreceate the humor. Did not know its f... ranger was a thing.

I have owned two frontiers, two tundras, one tacoma preerunner and my current ranger is by far my favorite truck of all.
