Cool
The Ranger uses the MAP sensor, which has a dual purpose, Manifold Pressure/Temperature.
, it’s got nothing to do with an air filter at all!

Yes a tmap or whatever you want to call it. That is a sensor that is built to have hot oily air with fuel vapor and other nasty stuff because it’s located in the intake manifold like a mile away from the air intake.
then just call me paranoid lol

That is a Hemi, not the same situation at all. They might have a sensor that could be affected but….. not our trucks…. It’s not related.

Absolutely! I love open filter intakes, especially since it always seems to bring out the engineering department. People love to believe in cold air instead of flow.

In summer in Tucson AZ we do not have any cold air to intake.
Just lots of hot air ( : o

I too have the Ford Tune that came with the K&N filter but there's numerous evidence and videos https://www.facebook.com/reel/381281334519274 about these oil filters and how the residue from them can screw up your MAPT sensor so I went back to the Ford paper filter but that tune is awesome and worth every penny
There is no sensor that is affected like that on our trucks. We don’t have a MAF sensor and all the other sensors are pretty much immune to oil contamination.
I ran a K&N replacement filter in my old Sport Trac for 13 years and over 200,000 miles and never had a problem. Those do have a MAF that can get fouled and throw a CEL if you put too much oil on it. I would clean mine once a year in the spring, not use too much oil, never had a problem.
Still have a paper filter in the Ranger but will probably get a K&N next time.

i built a make shift ram out of the void behind the grill. I used all weather tape and some card board. $2 LOL. I notice some improvement in response so I ordered Big Mouth from Verlossa. IDK about the Mpg's BC i am on the throttle to much.

I am thinking about cutting a bigger hole in the cover then marrying up to the Big Mouth and sealing it up. Then retrofitting hood seals with my own, to test the delta over ambient and Throttle response. If it is a total Gimmick at least it looks cool HEHE. I think it will help though. My Redneck Ram had some benefit. Cutting the cover up is kind of pushing it but they are $40 OEM, so it's not the end of the world. Using the Dremel and some weather stripping wont take long. Just interested to see what it would run like if it was truly piped correctly, even with the weird pathway.
End of the day I went with a dual option Rapid induction intake from AFE. It has a open box design that fits on the OEM lower. got the closed end cover for quieter operation. make a big sound difference. CLosed are cooler under little drive or heavy heat days. Sounds mean and turbo loud when open. power difference is fractional bc i can't feel it and i don't have times yet.

I have dyno tested quite a few intakes on my truck and other Rangers in various combinations.
Basically, a stock truck on 93 octane will gain about 10rwhp with almost any aftermarket intake. Tuned it’s worth pretty much the same power until you reach a level where you really need that available air. I have noticed that even stock the pedal feeling and lower rpm power is improved with an intake. I currently have a 4” open element intake and a 3.5” turbo inlet on mine and the difference over stock was noticeable, in data, dyno and butt dyno.

@Loweredon33s what would it take for a run of the turbo inlet elbow for our 5G's? Minimum order? In my mind anyone who is considering a turbo 'upgrade' and a free flowing downpipe should be making it part of the package.

Honestly the factory box shaped tube is so poorly optimized, I think almost anyone could benefit from this over a cold air intake.

The stock housing does look quite bad, the inlet to the box is so much smaller than the outlet. I have just run K&N and AEM filters all this time but since doing engine bolt-ons and a Ford tune, I am thinking of getting the s&b cold air intake. Good price and they apparently manufacture everything in house. I want to make sure none of the stick hybrid Tacos are faster
