My battery will be 6 years old, so I plan to replace it before a cross-country trip this spring. I’ve seen posts on this site that state you need a Forscan device (or similar), which I don’t have, to do a BMS reset. I’d like to get a definitive answer on this, so I went through version 4 of the Owner’s Manual and found 212 references to “battery”. I culled out the ones that relate to how to replace the battery, and what features need to be reset after replacement.
The key things in the manual seem to be on pages 264 and 265: 1) Give the battery 8 hours of vehicle sleep time. And 2) Wait 2 minutes prior to disconnecting the battery.
If I follow the instructions in the manual, will everything work properly, or do I need to do something more?
If I need a Forscan device to reset the BMS, can somebody recommend the simplest, least costly one; I don’t plan to make system/operation changes.
Below are the applicable sections of the manual, and a PDF of the pages is attached.
Thanks in advance, Mark

- P 72: When disconnecting the battery or when it runs out of charge, the illuminated components turn to the maximum setting.
- P 79: In the event of a flat battery or after the battery is disconnected from the vehicle, you must reset the memory for the driver window.
- P 79: If you disconnect the battery, you must reset the bounce-back memory separately for each window.
- P 133: If you disconnect the battery, your vehicle may exhibit some unusual driving characteristics for approximately 5 mi (8 km) after you reconnect it. This is because the engine management system must realign itself with the engine. You can disregard any unusual driving characteristics during this period.
- P 151: If you have just serviced the vehicle’s engine or transmission or the battery has recently run down or you have replaced it, the OBD-II system may indicate that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.
- P 230: Do not disconnect the battery of the disabled vehicle as this could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
- P 241: When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, you need to reset some features. See Changing the 12V Battery (page 264).
- P 242: When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, you need to reset some features. See Changing the 12V Battery (page 264).
- P 263: Charging and replacing the battery requires the driver power window to be re-initialized. See Windows and Mirrors (page 77). … When a battery replacement is required, you must use a recommended replacement battery that matches the electrical requirements of the vehicle.
- P 264: After battery replacement, or in some cases after charging the battery with the external charger, the Battery Management System requires eight hours of vehicle sleep time (key off with doors closed) to relearn the new battery state of charge. Prior to relearning the state of charge, the Battery Management System may disable electrical features (to protect the battery) earlier than normal. … For vehicles with Auto-Start-Stop the battery requirement is different. You must replace the battery with one of exactly the same specification.
- P 265: If a replacement battery is required, we recommend you use a Ford replacement battery that matches the electrical requirements of your vehicle. If you disconnect or replace the battery and your vehicle has an automatic transmission, transmission must relearn its adaptive strategy. Because of this, the transmission may shift firmly when first driven. This is normal operation while the transmission fully updates its operation to optimum shift feel. Remove and Reinstall the Battery To disconnect or remove the battery, do the following: 1. Apply the parking brake and switch the ignition off. 2. Switch all electrical equipment off, for example lights and radio. 3. Wait a minimum of two minutes before disconnecting the battery. Note: The engine management system has a power hold function and remains powered for a period after you switch the ignition off. This is to allow diagnostic and adaptive tables to be stored. Disconnecting the battery without waiting can cause damage not covered by the vehicle Warranty. 4. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable terminal first. 5. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable terminal last. 6. Remove the battery securing clamp. 7. Remove the battery. 8. Install in the reverse order. Note: Before reconnecting the battery, make sure the ignition remains switched off. Note: If you only disconnect the negative battery cable terminal, make sure it is isolated or placed away from the battery terminal to avoid un-intended connection or arcing. Note: Make sure the battery cable terminals are fully tightened. Note: If you disconnect or replace the battery, you must reset the clock and the pre-set radio stations once the battery is reconnected.
- P 279: It is necessary to reset memory features if battery cables are disconnected.
