My battery will be 6 years old, so I plan to replace it before a cross-country trip this spring. I’ve seen posts on this site that state you need a Forscan device (or similar), which I don’t have, to do a BMS reset. I’d like to get a definitive answer on this, so I went through version 4 of the Owner’s Manual and found 212 references to “battery”. I culled out the ones that relate to how to replace the battery, and what features need to be reset after replacement.

The key things in the manual seem to be on pages 264 and 265: 1) Give the battery 8 hours of vehicle sleep time. And 2) Wait 2 minutes prior to disconnecting the battery.

If I follow the instructions in the manual, will everything work properly, or do I need to do something more?

If I need a Forscan device to reset the BMS, can somebody recommend the simplest, least costly one; I don’t plan to make system/operation changes.

Below are the applicable sections of the manual, and a PDF of the pages is attached.

Thanks in advance, Mark

  • P 72: When disconnecting the battery or when it runs out of charge, the illuminated components turn to the maximum setting.
  • P 79: In the event of a flat battery or after the battery is disconnected from the vehicle, you must reset the memory for the driver window.
  • P 79: If you disconnect the battery, you must reset the bounce-back memory separately for each window.
  • P 133: If you disconnect the battery, your vehicle may exhibit some unusual driving characteristics for approximately 5 mi (8 km) after you reconnect it. This is because the engine management system must realign itself with the engine. You can disregard any unusual driving characteristics during this period.
  • P 151: If you have just serviced the vehicle’s engine or transmission or the battery has recently run down or you have replaced it, the OBD-II system may indicate that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.
  • P 230: Do not disconnect the battery of the disabled vehicle as this could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
  • P 241: When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, you need to reset some features. See Changing the 12V Battery (page 264).
  • P 242: When you disconnect and reconnect the battery, you need to reset some features. See Changing the 12V Battery (page 264).
  • P 263: Charging and replacing the battery requires the driver power window to be re-initialized. See Windows and Mirrors (page 77). … When a battery replacement is required, you must use a recommended replacement battery that matches the electrical requirements of the vehicle.
  • P 264: After battery replacement, or in some cases after charging the battery with the external charger, the Battery Management System requires eight hours of vehicle sleep time (key off with doors closed) to relearn the new battery state of charge. Prior to relearning the state of charge, the Battery Management System may disable electrical features (to protect the battery) earlier than normal. … For vehicles with Auto-Start-Stop the battery requirement is different. You must replace the battery with one of exactly the same specification.
  • P 265: If a replacement battery is required, we recommend you use a Ford replacement battery that matches the electrical requirements of your vehicle. If you disconnect or replace the battery and your vehicle has an automatic transmission, transmission must relearn its adaptive strategy. Because of this, the transmission may shift firmly when first driven. This is normal operation while the transmission fully updates its operation to optimum shift feel. Remove and Reinstall the Battery To disconnect or remove the battery, do the following: 1. Apply the parking brake and switch the ignition off. 2. Switch all electrical equipment off, for example lights and radio. 3. Wait a minimum of two minutes before disconnecting the battery. Note: The engine management system has a power hold function and remains powered for a period after you switch the ignition off. This is to allow diagnostic and adaptive tables to be stored. Disconnecting the battery without waiting can cause damage not covered by the vehicle Warranty. 4. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable terminal first. 5. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable terminal last. 6. Remove the battery securing clamp. 7. Remove the battery. 8. Install in the reverse order. Note: Before reconnecting the battery, make sure the ignition remains switched off. Note: If you only disconnect the negative battery cable terminal, make sure it is isolated or placed away from the battery terminal to avoid un-intended connection or arcing. Note: Make sure the battery cable terminals are fully tightened. Note: If you disconnect or replace the battery, you must reset the clock and the pre-set radio stations once the battery is reconnected.
  • P 279: It is necessary to reset memory features if battery cables are disconnected.

You will have to reset the driver's side window auto up/down using the procedure in the manual. Only the driver's window is affected.

Ranger BMS Reset Procedure After a Battery Replacement

Key accessory on / engine off. Flash brights 5 times. Pump brake 5 times. Battery icon flashed four times indicating BMS reset.

A couple of weeks ago my 2019 Ranger Lariat with the original battery started acting up.
I could only get the driver's door to unlock and lock using the door handle touch option. Read some posts from the past and others experienced this and said it was the BMS. Looked over the owners manual and decided to replace the battery while being concerned like you after all of the things that could happen. So I bought a new battery from the dealer and tossed it in and let it sit overnight. Went out the next morning started it up and the only thing I had to do was reset the drivers window for one touch operation. Nothing else. Talked to the service writer on my way out the door after buying the battery and he mentioned the tranny might take time to learn your driving habits thus shifts may be firm for several hundred miles. I did not experience any problems with trans

Thanks. I had seen this in other posts, but no mention in the manual at all. Good to know this works.

Thanks. Good to hear that the tranny re-learn was all the service guy mentioned. The manual also mentions the tranny re-learn.
Thanks again, Mark

There is all sorts of ways to reset the BMS. Depending on what you do and don't have available will depend on what method works best for you.

That said I would recommend going with the same type of battery in your truck. Where you get it is up to you. If not mistaken Ford has the best warranty at 100 months total(unless they changed that recently)

With older vehicles with a 12V lighter socket you could buy a 9V battery adapter to plug into that socket to keep the "flea power" energized and keep the various processor/controllers from loosing their memory during cranking battery disconnect.
Cigar lighter sockets are long gone. I believe all my ranger has is a couple USB adapters with only one 'always on' for key off device charging.
Could these be used to back feed low voltage to feed the controllers with a 5VDC USB power pack?
Or could I attach my low amp battery tender to the battery cables before removing them?

I'd be concerned this might mess up the BMS. Mark

I had my battery replaced and advanced auto installed it (with me watching). They plugged something in the odb-II port, I assume it was a something with power included. I didn't have to do anything, everything worked as before. I let it sit overnight, and then later on I went into forscan and reset the BMS, but I don't think I had to do that.

Did it look like this? I'll call the dealer to see if they use something similar.
https://www.amazon.com/OBD2-Memory-...cphy=9018109&hvtargid=pla-2360780325807&psc=1
You asking me? It was a box type thing with a handle. I didn't pay attention to it, but it was about the size the an old weller soldering gun case if you know what I mean. At first I thought it was some scanner thingy, and it may have been, but all he did was plug it in and then replaced the battery. If I were to guess I'd say that thing from amazon would serve the same purpose.

Yes, I meant to reply to you but I jumped down to a general reply.
I'm guessing the case had a 12V battery or jump pack. The Amazon device has battery clamps. So to use it you have to attach it to another 12V battery. Our second car is next to the Ranger, and the boat's battery is in on the floor with a battery tender.

I have only a simple OBDII reader (Autophix 3210); it doesn't show me any info about the battery. I'd like to be able to confirm the BMS reset. What would I need to buy to be able to actually perform a BMS reset and confirm by battery date?

Regarding the replacement battery, I plan to buy a Ford replacement.

Thanks, Mark

If you need to replace a battery, this seems odd...

  • P 230: Do not disconnect the battery of the disabled vehicle as this could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
