Is Android Auto installed on your phone? That's mandatory.

That screen looks just like the one in my Lariat minus the AA tab on the bottom.

Be sure the type of cable you're using is a "data" type and not a "charging" type. This cable would work for sure. (amazon.)

If you have two to compare, the charging style cord will feel thinner between your fingers than the data style. The data cables actually have more fibers of cable and hence the faster data transfer speeds.

The first time I plugged my phone in it would only charge because I was not using a powerful enough cable. I also thought my head unit didn't have Android Auto - but it does. You have got the correct Sync3 head unit.

I don't own any "charge only" cables. They've all been tossed.

Yes I've plugged the phone into the USB ports and "Android Auto" is displayed on the phone. I loaded a "Sync 3" compatible app on the phone and the 'search apps" function still couldn't find it. Basically nothing changes on the screen when the phone is connected and nothing is mirrored to the display.

By comparison, in our Taos, Android Auto works without doing anything. No wired connection, no jumping through hoops. It just works and looks great. After pairing once, you tap on the Android Auto icon on the screen and presto, everything including navigation is displayed. The Ford version just seems to be very lacking by comparison and not very user-friendly.

I may replace the unit with a more feature-rich, aftermarket stereo. Was reading about a Kenwood radio a guy installed and he said it was substantially nicer with a lot more features than the stock Ford unit. Not a big deal at the moment though. Still have other stuff to finish up.

The new body shop called this afternoon and said they had an opening on their frame rack so the truck is currently there getting the frame rail corrected. The guys were impressed with the Eibach struts. Should be able to install the rest of the front end parts next week sometime. The owner said he has a long bed he's putting on a supercrew chassis, just to be different.

Something odd I noticed is the "Auto" window doesn't auto. Recently picked up a bidirectional iCarsoft scanner so I might see if it will read some of the modules instead of dragging out the laptop and using FORscan. Either way, I still need FORscan to program the steering rack.

The new body shop has a super friendly shop cat. He hung out with me while I was waiting for my wife to pick me up. That's probably why the other body shop did such shoddy work. They didn't have a shop cat.

Been so long since I set mine up, 5 years, but it should have popped up a message about making some AA setting changes. Hopefully someone that's done it more recently will chime in.

Edit: there is a Auto window reset procedure that needs to be done anytime the battery is disconnected.

That's interesting. I wonder what the point of a reset for the auto window function would be. Have never encountered that in any of my other vehicles. I noticed the start/stop isn't working either, which is fine.

The owner's manual has the procedure for the window reset.

Busy Ranger morning. Got it insured last night and went to a local place for the emissions first thing. I knew it wouldn't pass because the ECU wasn't ready. Needs some more driving time. But I wanted the paperwork to show a cop I was in the registration process if necessary. Otherwise the March of 2023 purchase date would look seriously suspicious.

Next it went to a recommended auto body shop in a nearby town recommended by a local shop that said their frame rack was a little too small for the truck. The recommended shop specializes in frames. They have the highest ratings I've seen for any body shop in the area. Didn't even know they existed until today. The owner was super nice and very knowledgeable. We talked for quite a while and he looked over the Ranger thoroughly. He agreed that it was unfortunate the work hadn't been done to a higher standard. The quality of the end result would have without question been substantially higher, and my personal experience much better with these guys.

Anyway, he said that to properly correct the angle of the driver side front frame rail will require grinding off the welds on the sides and bottom where it was attached, moving the rail up slightly to where it should be then welding it back in place. That may affect the alignment of the fender slightly so that's going to be interesting.

Next was the glass shop. New windshield and camera alignment will total about $600. Appointment is for tomorrow morning.

So how does it drive? Fairly well. I've been very ginger with it so far listening and feeling for anything odd. A few clunky shifts but nothing horrible. My eyeball alignment is pretty good. I'll have an official alignment done after final height adjustments. I'm good with the front height overall but the driver side does seem to be slightly lower than the passenger side.

It's smooth on the highway even running on year and a half old fuel. Very slight tire imbalance but nothing major.

Only thing I'm not sure about is a minor shudder starting out from a stop through first gear. Can't tell if its the drive-train or the mud tires. Again, nothing major.

It will probably be two weeks or more until the body shop can work on the frame rail. In the meantime I put the bumper on as to not attract unwanted attention. The driving lights are just cheap floods. I'd like some real fog lights that have a horizontal cutoff so they can be used with oncoming traffic. Only ones I've found and like so far are the OEM version on the F150. Would have to make custom mounts for those, though.

Other thing I was surprised about is no on-screen navigation, not even when using Android Auto. Just a compass shows up on screen. Haven't investigated that enough to figure it out yet but I really like our VW where a map on the phone is mirrored to the screen. At least I got it figured out enough to listen to an audio book. Was also surprised there isn't a garage door opener. Guess that's reserved for the Lariat.

Grill is a bit shiny compared to everything else. Could use a coat of something matte. Maybe even the bed liner spray. Thinking about a black textured bug guard as well.

This is not a wireless Android Auto system, although I run an aftermarket adapter that works great (AAwireless).

Try this. Unplug the phone from the truck. Start it and let the Sync come completely up. Start AA on your phone. Once it's on the phone screen, plug the cable into the truck. Your phone screen should switch to something like "Android Auto is now on your vehicle screen" or something like that. If not, then either the cable is bad or there is a Sync setting that's off.

Being a salvage build is it possible Ford (or somebody) "zeroed out" the Nav and other portions of the Sync3 system?

I'm just tossing spaghetti b/c these days, who knows? We need to be good with not just body and motor, we also have to be IT hobbyists!

The cable is fine. It's new. As mentioned previously, the phone displays "Android Auto Connected" when the phone is plugged in. It's just that nothing changes on the dash display. That said, trying a different cable is a logical diagnostic step.

Android Auto is already active on devices running Android 10 and above. There's nothing you need to activate on your phone. Only older phones or devices running an older version of Android would need to install a separate Android Auto app. My phone shows a previous connection history to VW and Ford, meaning this Ranger.

Android Auto works seamlessy and wirelessly with my phone in our 2022 Taos. You tap the icon on the dash screen, it comes right up and displays everything as it should. There's just something goofy with the Ford unit. The fact you have to physically connect your phone to the vehicle to make it work at all is kind of odd, even for a 2020 model year.

An infotainment upgrade to something like this Yulu system might be nice. But sometimes they're just more headaches. Reviews say some things don't work properly while others don't mention them. But apparently you lose the microphone and GPS antenna and have to use ones that come with the unit. Also apparently a knob can't be assigned to radio volume so volume is touchscreen only. Volume knobs are definitely more convenient. One guy said his Yulu becomes posessed if the temperature is below 55°. So who knows.

An upgrade of some type would still be a few items down the list from other things at any rate, like getting a professional spray-in bed-liner. I can live with maps on my phone for now. The unit plays my audio books and hands-free calling works well. Those are the most important to me at the moment. I'll live with it for now and focus on life's other more pressing matters.

Thanks. I'm one of those people who tries to see projects through to the end, especially with so much personal investment. Can't say I didn't want to push the thing off a cliff at times, though.

Even with the parts problems, a competent body shop would have made things so much less stressful. Lessons learned. But a lot of body shops won't accept projects like this because they don't make nearly as much as with insurance claims. So it just is what it is.

For what it's worth in your troubleshooting; I personally never launch the Android Auto app on my phone. I plug my phone in - I actually am running the Dock Tailors phone dock (site vendor,) for about a year now and just drop my phone in and the unit does the rest for me. I personally find the Ford unit to be plenty snappy and responsive. "Perfect?" Well, I'm not a tech guy. Not laggy to me.

Perhaps a head unit update? That's risky with Sync3... definitely freshen up on the procedure beforehand.

You guys aren't going to believe this.

First though, the new body shop got the frame rail angle corrected. There went another $547. When first looking at it, they mentioned that the rubber cushion between the frame and body mount looked stretched. After they adjusted the rail to its correct position, they said the cushion settled correctly on the mount. Nothing else moved and everything else looks good.

The guy also said he thought I did a great job selecting the shocks, flares, tires and wheels and so forth. He was especially interested in the shocks since the Eibachs are twist-collar adjustable. He also said he might want to purchase the other flares I have that are like the ones on the Ranger now but smooth and can be painted.

Second, I got Android Auto to work. Believe it or not it was the cable. Was it a charge-only cable? No, it isn't. I probably have 8 or so USB-C cables for various applications - drones, tablets, cameras, phones... They all transfer data fine. I immediately took the suspect cable into the house, plugged it into my desktop with my phone and it's connected and transferring data fine. Why it wasn't working in the Ranger is a total mystery.

Bottom line, no need for an upgrade. I'm good, for now.
