Bad start to the weekend. I was clearly not paying attention and accidentally hit the 87 button this morning filling up. Running the 91-93 LMS tune. I put 13.526 gallons in with the remaining 93 I had. Oh well, guess I'll take it easy until I can get some more 93 in it.

When you use a performance tune that requires 93 octane the ECU does not have the ability to completely compensate for the lower octane.

Drive it easy until you can dilute the 87 and you won't have any issues.

I went to an 87 Performance tune over 16k miles ago and don't miss the extra power up high in the rpm range and as with every other vehicle I have owned over the past 50 years I have never seen a measurable difference in fuel mileage with lower octane.

I run 91 in the hot months and 87 or 89 in the cool months.
90 degrees and up. Under 90 degrees.
In the Ranger and the 3.5L Ecoboost van. Fuelly app shows all my best MPG fills in the hot months and the really low MPG fills in the cold.
All my 20 plus MPG fill ups both vehicles have been on 91.

In the Ranger and the 3.5L Ecoboost van. Fuelly app shows all my best MPG fills in the hot months and the really low MPG fills in the cold.
All my 20 plus MPG fill ups both vehicles have been on 91.

In the winter the gasoline is blended with more volatiles like benzene and butane to help the vehicle start easier. This winter blend has less BTUs so you use more, combine that with thicker oils in the cold, longer running enriched and increased rolling resistance of the tires it is not uncommon to see a 2 to 4 mpg mileage loss in the winter. I see about a 2.5 mpg hit in the winter.

FWIW, I get about 22.5 to 23.5 mpg around town in the summer months where it has 93 or 87.

Makes sense.
Fact is 87 octane RBOB works so well with a stock tune that I don't even use 91 when towing anymore. I have tried non ethanol gas and 91 octane fuel and I have failed to discern any significant improvement in performance or fuel economy.
I suspect that your occasional use of 87 will do no harm as long as there is still enough timing control left with your tune, you will likely notice some difference, but you do still have knock sensors.

yeah just stay out of boost till you get down to half a tank then top it off with 93. you'll be fine

Ok, so I got a bottle of Lucas octane boost and threw it in the truck, then later I poured it in the tank. I have a hour and a half one way trip this weekend and 2/3 highway at 70mph+, so now I feel better.
