I did the exact same thing several thousand miles ago......shifted to D, and forgot about it till your post. Never a problem and it just seems to get better and better every drive.

My guess is that the rev limiter is there for just this type behavior.

Thanks for easing my mind! So you don’t believe I’ve scored the cylinder walls or done anything to the engine? She does sound very nice rolling through the RPMs. Reminds me of the Focus.
Your fine. Dont do again till after break-in an also an early oil change in my opinion . Real good brand full synthetic 5w30 w/Motorcraft filter. It does shift on it's own in my truck ...maybe if you dont touch the manual gear shift?

I'd be willing to bet most of these trucks have been driven pretty hard on test drives at the dealer anyway. I know the one I test drove, the salesman was definitely encouraging me to 'open it up' on the highway on ramp, and I didn't hold back.

Well, silly me didn’t read through my manual. I have 380 miles on my truck and had decided to test out sport mode. Little did I know the truck would not shift by itself (like my old yota) and ran the truck all the way up through red line and backed off QUICKLY while sobbing. I assumed that sport mode would essentially shift by itself if there was no user input from the shift buttons.

How much damage have I done to my engine? I know I’m still within break-in period. I don’t personally believe I have ever gotten this truck above 2,500 RPMs.
I am pretty sure that there is a rev-limiter within the ignition module, designed to prevent this sort of accidental damage. I found out about this technology when I over-revved my then brand-new GL1800 Goldwing - with no damage.

There is an engine rev limiter that will cut fuel at a certain RPM however it's still possible to over-rev the engine if you're in too low of a gear for the engine to spin up to. I don't think the select shift will let you down shift into a gear that's too low for the current road speed though.

I find it hilarious that he hits the brakes just before landing :D

Optional air brakes maybe?
he wanted to stop his diaper filled up :camera:

I probably should have worded the post differently.

I didn't actually go over red line, I bumped red line on a brand new truck. In other words, I hit ~6,000 RPM because I was under the impression that the sport mode would shift automatically. The engine never went inside the redline.

Sport mode does shift automatically if you just shift to S and don't hit the buttons to select a specific gear. It shifts at a higher RPM than D and changes some other stuff to make the truck more responsive. If it worked exactly like D there wouldn't be a point in having a second setting, would there?

Hey brother, it's my first new vehicle. I knew sport mode was manual shift, but I assumed the engine would shift automatically before it hit redline. Now I know it doesn't if it is touched. It didn't and that was a user error i.e. me, but I was concerned more so about the damaged I caused, if any. Thanks.

i guess the engine didn't go over the redline because it was limited???

try it a second time, but stay in it, and lets see if it stops right at the redline...or goes over...brap! brap! brap!!!!!
You go for it.

Maybe that's something that Ford needs to address. It's definitely very easy to inadvertently press the "+/-" switch when shifting into S mode. I know that when I fist got the truck I did exactly the same thing thinking it wasn't actually in Select Shift mode. It definitely startled me as well.

Kick back and enjoy driving it - I have been known to hit the redline (or more) a couple of times
