Low oil pressure will take the turbo out. Did they explain why it had low oil pressure? I’d be way more concerned about that.
Yeah, maybe the oil filter screens o. The turbo are clogged?

OP, what mileage interval where you changing oil?

Wasn't there a video shared on here about those turbo oil screens? They clogged but at over 200K. I think changing the oil earlier like around 5K helps keep them from clogging compared to 10K oil changes.

I'm with the OP, I'd probably tackle it myself too.

An upgrade would be sweet but after this issue I'm already concerned with the reliability of this vehicle. Mo' boost mo' problems. I feel like I should just go back to an 80's truck and ditch all this tech once I get this fixed.
After some issues today I told my buddy the same thing. Get me a 1985 Toyota mini truck. 5 sp manual, ac and no other options. No tech, no problems. Tired of this modern crap.

I suppose bad oil/cheap oil filters could bring this on. Since OP got this truck used it begs questions and validates those who change often, use synthetic and Ford oil filters not the cheapest oil and filter at maximum intervals.

You know those truck owners exist.

I've wondered if there was much improvement available in turbos, you can fool with wastegate settings I suppose and the stock turbo has more performance capabilities than Ford sends it out the door with. My understanding is that while the computer controls peak boost the bigger the turbo, the lag time for power increases? These aftermarket units use stock Ford housings with custom billet impellers. I'd like to see how to get the boost to come on earlier with a broader powerband but I suppose that comes at the expense of fuel economy. Plus all the related intake/exhaust mods.

Found a couple on FBM that are tempting me ? Gotta focus on getting the Ranger back up though, and depending how I feel afterwards I’ll make the decision - I don’t want to do anything too rash. As much as I hate modern BS I do really love the truck. I just wish manufacturers could still build and sell those old trucks.

All that I've read on the internet (take with whatever caution that deserves), extended oil change intervals can lead to turbo unit failure due to clogging of the intake screens with soot. While the oil if analyzed will still test good, the suspended fine soot particulates begin clogging the screens.

I've always used Mobil 1, both oil and filters. Hopefully their reputation of highest quality will reduce the potential for issues.

OP bought this truck used.
Service records?
Damage may have been done by former owners extended or no oil changes.

This is what I was thinking. I have a friend that only keeps a vehicle a year or 18 months at the most . He says changing oil is just a waste of time and money ,lol.

I had a neighbor that would buy a 2 year old car every two years an not open the hood for two years then trade it for another one. He had a collector car he pampered though.

i know little about turbos but in my experience they are pretty tough unless "abused". i had a dodge with the 12valve cummins and holset turbo. i sold the truck with a bit over half a million miles on it. still had the original factory installed turbo and it never needed any type of service. i see the guy that bought it now and then. still drives it and its still going strong. on the opposite end of the longevity i knew a guy that worked at a performance shop and they seemed to be installing new turbos on something every week. so id wager the first owner of the ops truck was rough on it and didnt do his part on maintenance. sad being a newish truck still .hope it gets worked out.

When i purchased my truck the extended warranty sales guy tried some very pressuring fear based sales and told me the "turbo is a ticking time bomb" i almost walked out. I didn't buy what he was selling and haven't heard of many failure. Sorry to hear yours went kaboom and hope you get it resolved without to much fu$$
Why do these assholes say that? If I managed a dealership and heard that he'd be out the door.
If I was buying and heard that I'd be out the door and stop long enough to tell the sales person why he just lost money
