Hi all, this is my first time posting on the forum so let me know if this is the wrong area for this. First off the truck is a 2020 Ranger FX4 with 62k miles, I bought it last year. Last week I got three check engine notifications on my FordPass app for "Turbo wastegate stuck closed" "Engine oil pressure low" and "Powertrain malfunction / reduced power." I took it straight to the dealer and my powertrain warranty is 2,000 miles expired. They told me the turbo was toast and gave me an estimate of $3,200. I got the detailed breakdown on that and its $900 in parts and $2,300 for 7 hours of labor. $328/hr??? An independent quoted me $1800-$2100 which seemed more reasonable. How hard is it really to swap out the turbo? I've seen a few videos and it seems like a pretty simple bolt-off, bolt-on job. I think I could do it myself judging by the videos I've seen but my only previous car experience is a 1988 MR2 that I had as a project for 4 years - a 2020 Ecoboost is quiet a big jump in complexity. I also hear the actuators are prone to going bad on these so it might not be the entire turbo. Has anyone here replaced the OEM turbo and if so how hard of a job was it? Anyone got a detailed guide on the matter? Everything I get on google is for upgrades or wastegate installs.

I would also look at upgrading... I bite my tongue saying that but if you need to replace it, why not... 🤷‍♂️
An upgrade would be sweet but after this issue I'm already concerned with the reliability of this vehicle. Mo' boost mo' problems. I feel like I should just go back to an 80's truck and ditch all this tech once I get this fixed.

When i purchased my truck the extended warranty sales guy tried some very pressuring fear based sales and told me the "turbo is a ticking time bomb" i almost walked out. I didn't buy what he was selling and haven't heard of many failure. Sorry to hear yours went kaboom and hope you get it resolved without to much fu$$

Yeah I wish I had taken it in at 55k for the 60k service. Maybe they would have caught it early and I would have been able to get it repaired under warranty. It's only gonna be about $650 if I do it myself so I'm not as worried anymore.

Please follow up your experience if you replace it yourself.
I'll be sure to post an update. I found the shop manual and the entire removal/installation of the Turbo and all the lines is only 30 steps or so. Should be an easy weekend project.

I just ordered an upgraded turbo for mine. FYI the stock turbo is pretty cheap brand new and should be a few hours to install, there is a little filter in the oil feed that needs to be replaced or you might damage the replacement unit. If you go with an upgrade don’t forget that they require a specific tune to work.

Awesome. Yeah the shop gave me a full parts list, pricing it out myself comes out to $633, which is $2567 less than the dealer.

If you already feel that way about it bring it over to me in Colorado and hand me the keys, I will take care of her from now on and you can take some vehicle from the 80's to run around in.
