update I went home from work and never showed up. Is it still worth bringing in?

I would read "check 4x4" quite literally.

Put into 4hi and 4 low. Make sure she's working. If so, call it good.

Just what I would do. But maybe better safe than sorry, tough call.

Yes it would be but Is it urgent? Probably not.

But either way the message means - “A 4X4 system fault is present. Contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.”

I’d have to think a code got stored for the techs to check into it.

Pg 91 of the pdf version of your owner's manual, or pg. 88 paper should provide the only answer you need. Or you can go by the word of internet strangers. My strange opinion is that you'd open yourself up to warranty denial if you cause damage that could have been avoided had you followed Ford's direction.

If it were mine I would contact your dealer to let them know & make an appointment so they can check it out, as one said that covers your butt for any warranty issue in the future.

How many miles do have on your Ranger? Also, have you serviced the 4x4 system lately or might it need servicing based on mileage or your activity level off-road? Just thinking out loud from not knowing anything about your truck...
