Not sure if it helps on the newer vehicles but my 1999 Ranger had an issue with the4wheel drive. Turned out to be a minor lubrication issue in the actuator of the 4 wd not sure what it is called but the shop lubricated it and the mechanic told me to engage the 4WD once a month or so. I have gravel alley behind the house so that's what I did on that truck and my 2019 I haven't had an issue. Like a lot of things you have to use it or lose it
