What were your symptoms with fourth gear? I’m noticing a lurch/delayed shift between three and four with mine. If I drive it in tow or sport mode and keep the RPM’s over 2500, I can avoid it and get it to shift ok. I’m also out of warranty so whether I address it now or later, I’m out of pocket a good chunk of change.
I would take it in to get checked, especially if you have some kind of warranty. Mine was doing that going into fourth from 1-3 but mostly slipping into fourth. According to the dealer, there were metal shavings in my fluid and that’s what they’re basing their recommendation for a replacement for.

That’s how my 2019 has behaved for years…noticeable hesitation, slight lurch going from 3rd to 4th gear. Wild enough would usually only occur once every day or two. 😑

I had my dealer flush my transmission a few months ago and it has improved significantly at least…For now..(75k miles) 😆

That started up out of no where for me and it did that when it went out the first time

It was not and they didn’t rebuild the first one but installed a reman unit from ford. I went to the dealer this time because I wanted a longer warranty just in case as I would like to continue not having a car note. The shop in question has rebuilt a couple of transmissions for family members that are still driving on the rebuilt units 15 years later with more miles on the rebuild than the one the manufacturers built.
It’s just between the transmission issues, my backup camera issues and now the radio issues I’m having, it’s hard to find a reason to keep it.
I'm with Dave and not knocking the first shop. With so many of these 10r80's out there, any reputable shop should be able learn and diagnose them properly. But inherent issues could prevent lasting repairs.

No, I didn't watch any of their other videos. One thing that sounded concerning was when they said (paraphrasing here) they didn't recall ever seeing one with bad valve bodies. He also said it's on the Internet and you have to be careful of what you read on there because there's a lot of false information there.

We've seen several here who had bad valve bodies so my BS meter is kind of high now.

Dave I think he is just telling you what they are seeing at the shop. Not sure why he is not talking about the valve body more. Sounds like he thinks the CDF drum and the garbage can are much more common issues with this transmission.

Yes they both say the CDF drum and the trash can are what they've seen fail (which I agree with) but watch it at the 13:30 mark. The guy on the left clearly says he's never seen one come in with a bad valve body and people on the internet are lying about it. Then he says "some people are experts and some people aren't but they sure act like they are". Then makes a snarky remark "maybe I'm not an expert"

They've been in business for 54 years (1972) and in all this time they've never seen a valve body fail on a 10R80

Take it for what it's worth but read their Yelp reviews. This is why I don't trust Google reviews because they're the opposite. I found this to be true with almost every restaurant or business I look up on both of these. Yelp show the good & bad ones yet Goole usually seems to be all good ones. Not always but most times.

OP, if you could go into details about this 4th gear symptom I'm interested to hear?

2nd question/follow up would be what if any preventative or required repairs/maintenance had you done leading up to the actual failures of the transmissions?

I appreciate your responses in advance and am truly sorry you're going through it.

Nate weighs in again critical of how Ford is handling the 10R80. At the end he concludes newer cars are designed to fail on purpose.

Nate says his business model is fixing manufacturing flaws. If/when the time comes and I'm out of (extended) warranty I'll probably drop some coin on a rebuild with better engineered components.

It's pretty bad that Ford knows about this problem yet refuses to fix it right and uses a software update to try and fix a hardware problem. Even worse is Nate has the fix yet Ford wanted nothing to do with it. 🤦‍♂️ Glad Nate patented it so they can't copy it!

But they WILL recall for a windshield wiper issue.

That was the owner who said he has never seen the valve body fail. The chief mechanic said the value body failure was on fewer transmissions than the trash can or drum issues. It is probably time to send an email to their podcast to have them clarify this. At least with the valve body change, you do not need to drop the transmission. Looks like you just need to remove the pan and the filter and valve body is easily accessible. So, I guess this leads to the question: if they get the transmission functioning correctly without replacing the valve body, is the valve body still bad?

The Yelp reviews are very interesting. Their overall score is probably not bad for a transmission shop. It does sound like the owner and the employees answering the phone may need to change their attitude.
