Well you are the reason I had to buy 4 jugs of ultra yesterday….
If you're gonna buy 4, a 5 gallon pail is cheaper and you get a nice can for recycling the used oil.

3 Brand new boxes on the shelf and one that only has 3 quarts used out of it.

I maintain 4 cars with it though, so I'll use it in a year or so.

Since I am going to start changing my own oil, I did go this morning to Wally World and buy oil for the next 2 changes for the Ranger, and just one for my wife’s car.
There was plenty of oil except for the SuperTech brand.
Almost NO oil filters though for any car, so I went to O’Reilly and bought a few microguard select oil filters.
I still have a little over 4000 miles left on my current oil, so hopefully I’ll be set for a bit.

How does this affect fully Synthetic oils like Mobile one?
The article explains that and even mentions Mobile one specifically.

5W30 isn't likely to see shortages, but what you can expect is reformulations using different base stocks from what manufs have used the last few years. The Motorcraft spec isn't much more than the usual API SN/SP spec, so don't expect those oils to take much of a hit. You'll still be able to get them.

But for people that use higher quality oils I'd expect some interruption or bigtime price increases.

If you have cars that take 0WW8/0W16/0W20, that's where the main impact is going to be. Those oils rely on higher quality base stocks right out of the gate and you can't really use a 'lesser quality' base stock, additize the hell out of it, and still hit performance targets.

I just came across this article that shows the Crude oil inventories decreasing by 7.9 million barrels for the week ending May 15th. A lot of traders are talking about a potential parabolic leg up in prices as the physical shortages start hitting for real. Keep in mind we haven't even gotten close to the 2008 oil price high, which hit roughly double where we are today inflation adjusted, and that spike didn't correspond to any serious physical shortages.

The 2008 runup was more about the state of the oil industry back then. Oil producers found themselves drilling deeper and deeper in places like the Gulf or chasing fewer and fewer opportunities in far off/unstable or harsh-environment places in the world. The thinking was that we were running out of reserves and were having trouble replacing them. Also remember the last administration depleted our reserves and they were never filled back up.

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/US-Crude-Oil-Gasoline-Inventories-Sinking-Fast.html

Crude oil inventories in the United States decreased by 7.9 million barrels during the week ending May 15, according to new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released on Wednesday. The decrease brings commercial stockpiles to 445.0 million barrels, according to government data, which is now 2% below the five-year average for this time of year.

The EIA’s data release follows API’s figures that were released a day earlier, which reported that crude oil inventories saw a draw of 9.1 million barrels in the period.

10-4. A shortage is created when folks hoard for the aledged
forthcoming shortage.
ah…. Ummm….. well……. I um….. you see….. um….. ok, here goes. (Deep breath.) I went out yesterday and bought enough for three more oil changes. Even though I just changed the oil in the Ranger last Saturday. And on the way home was wondering if I should have bought more.

I’ll see myself out.
