So driving home I noticed a burning smell, at first thought it was rubber. then it would go away. I have an app to track coolant and trans temp and both where 190ish (oddly cool day below 70 in NC today!), so I proceeded home without stopping. Anyway when I got home I popped the hood and noticed oil on top of the engine! I am not 100% sure but I think when I pulled the dip stick it was not seated. I had my oil change a month or so back so started thinking they didnt seat it. I know I know - YOU DIDNT CHECK THE LEVEL AFTER THEY CHANGED THE OIL!? Sorry but NO. Anyway I still have oil in the truck. Either they made a mess when filling or oil sputtered out of the dip stick tube(not even sure if that would happen)? I am too tired to F with it tonight so treating it with some Bourbon for now. Tomorrow I will pull the umbrella off (AKA engine cover) and investigate further.
Thought I would post here in case there is anything known to blow oil on the top of the motor to look out for.
Thx in advance guys

Did it smell like fuel? ;)

I hope it’s as simple as what Patrick suggests it might be.

Yes, it was pretty cool in NC today...

Never trust quick oil change! Ever! Oil cap left off or dipstick not seated will do that to you...

I've done my own oil changes and noticed oil pressure pushing its back up the dipstick, if unseated it will certainly spray over the engine.

If it were me... I'd at the very least drop what oil in there, more worried about exposure to road debris getting in there and just put back in new oil, the filter is new so that'll be fine till next change if doing it yourself, or just go get another oil change but make sure everything is as it should be before pulling away.

Thanks
I was wondering if oil really could percolate out the dipstick.
Well its raining today and I am working from home today so once it stops I will look things over. If nothing obvious is found I will clean everything up and see of the oil leak continues

Well removed engine cover and did not see anything obviously broken or leaking. Oil pattern did seem to start around the dip stick. So I cleaned everything up and will give it a week to see if its cured.
Side note - no spots in the driveway so it was a slow leak

And an update just notice my engine cover is like an old lawn mower filter soaked in oil. This will be fun to clean. But on the bright side it minimized the oil that went all over the rest of the engine.😜
