I've not removed the intercooler, but last week I removed the grill (it is still off), and I believe the grill has to be removed to get to the intercooler. With the grill out you are staring right at it. And it is larger than I thought it would be.

I am surprised they couldn’t find it. Maybe it was just resting somewhere on top of something and when you had it towed it fell off?
Maybe, but I’m almost 99% it went in, but maybe my eyes deceived me and that’s what happened. I’ve been driving no issues but for peace of mind gonna remove the intercooler and rinse it out. He mentioned it could be stuck in a small layer of oil in the intercooler or a corner or something.

I doubt it would pass through the intercooler unless it was smaller than the id of the cross tubes. And it’s certainly not going backwards into the turbo

well if it was in the turbo I’m sure I’d know by now lol
But it could 100% fit in the intercooler tubes? Unless you’re meaning past the accessible 3”? Tube and -inside- the intercooler?

I meant the cross tubes of the intercooler which have a pretty small i.d. and fins internally. Air and fluid can pass through but debris would have a tough time passing through.

As your basic visual learner...

You were working here:
If it fell into the opening, it 99% probability that it followed the red arrow. If not, it fell out side the red circle and is in the engine bay somewhere (after driving it is on the ground or stuck in your tire which a flat tire will confirm in due time).

If it followed the arrow above, then it is in 1 of 2 places:
resting in the intercooler at the spots circled in red. (arrow is air flow direction).
Remove intercooler, invert and shake vigorously with a plastic baggy over the inlet and there's the fastener.

Good luck.

I doubt the fastener was long enough to create a flat tire. But point taken nonetheless.
