Since getting this ranger in Aug/Sept, I've assumed that it had a tune it felt peppier than the first and Auto Start Stop has been disabled. Not once has the ASS kicked in until just today. Nothing changed today. The only thing that comes to mind, and it doesn't make sense, is recently my battery has died twice after ~5 days or more of not running it. I also used tow mode. Neither of these were today and ASS wasn't in play immediately thereafter. What am I missing?

Tow/Haul mode disables A.S.S. A weak battery will prevent A.S.S from working.

If you charged your battery and turned off tow/haul mode, that would explain it working again.

Does tow/haul stay on after the truck is turned off and back on? I've put near 10k miles on it since owning it, driving it almost daily, short trips (<10mi), long trips (200mi+), city, highway... ASS never kicked in. Could the battery have been that "bad" despite working for 5mo without it kicking in once?

Would Forscan settings be cleared if the battery dies? (I haven't done anything in Forscan, but all the other options are hardware.. which shouldn't be affected)

Yes, short trips don't fully charge the battery, so it is probable.

I get short trips don't charge and a lot of mine are quite short, but i've also done 2-300mi trips. Absolutely never once kicked on. Didn't even kick on after i fully charged the battery.

That's the fun part. I have no idea. Bought the truck used and ASS never once took affect in over 5mo.

Tow/haul mode will disable A.S.S. as will Sport mode.

Understood, but this would be something I'd have to do each time I get in the truck, yeah? I wasn't doing anything (intentionally) to cause ASS to be disabled... it just was. I don't have a habit of using either mode... i only used tow for the first time on this ranger a couple days before ASS reared its head.

You can dial it out with Forscan or plug in a night light in back seat...

Did the previous owner install an ASS override device on the switch? They remember the last setting and don't reset on a key cycle. Might have accidentally hit the switch and turned it back on.

My guess would be that the person you bought it from had the battery maintenance plug disconnected, which disables the Auto Stop. It's the small two wire plug on your battery terminal. Since you said you've been having battery problems, in the process of checking it out it's likely that it got plugged back up somewhere along the way. If you don't want Auto Stop (as I don't), simply unplug the battery maintenance plug. Done. No codes, no dash lights no symptoms and it wont come on again in any mode unless you plug it back in. Mine has been disconnect over a year now, no issues except when software update/reboot occurred when I disconnected my battery. It wouldn't complete until I had it plugged back in. After it came up and the truck started, I unplugged again. No issues, no annoying Auto Stop.

If you use a scan tool there are approximately 125 PIDs, related to the ASS system and they are (True-False) PIDs - find the one that says (True) when it's not working and this will provide the reason.

Example:

Thanks all! I'll try a scan tool to see it if it stops again. I'll pop the hood and see if that disconnect is loosely reconnected... i haven't touched it intentionally and don't recall noticing anything loose or otherwise when i charged the battery.

I have the forscan dongle coming so i can brick the rest of the car Sunday : )

If you mean the ASS switch, i intentionally hit it to turn it off, but it came back on on the next go.

That is how it is designed to work. Was your truck's battery replaced or just recharged?
