A few thousand miles ago I had the truck at the dealer for a warranty transmission rebuild. I noticed when I got it home my new one piece lug nuts were scratched up on just the front wheels.

I went to rotate my tires and clean up the truck a bit and I could barely get the fronts off. I had my 1/2 ratchet with a cheater bar and struggled to the point I almost gave up. I'm a bit paranoid about the studs, they look fine but I've read of them breaking when over Torqued. Should I be worried?

I got the tires back on and Torqued them down to 100 ft/lb like I always do. Took it on a short drive then re Torqued again. Everything seemed normal.

I think they look fine- no galling or evidence of stripping, as long as the other ones look similar to that closeup stud you should be good to go.

That's kinda what I thought, just wanted to make sure. Didn't want any wheels to come off haha.

I have a 4-way lug wrench, you know, with 4 different size lug wrenches. It is the best thing for applying torque on tight nuts, you can apply equal torque on both sides. I remember breaking my Dad's ratchet as a teenager when using the breaker bar, step on it, method.
Oh, and get rid of those two-piece lug nuts.

I hate this, many years ago I used to own a Falcon 2door hard top.
Looked exactly like this one https://duckduckgo.com/?q=falcon+xb...ssets/77777--640/field_images/77777_640_1.jpg
I put it in to get a new set of tyres, some time later I wanted to remove the front wheels to replace the brake pads. I could not get them off. I am not a small man, and was quite strong when I was younger. I sent it back to the shop that replaced the tyres, complained, and said "well you get them off then" Well they couldn't get them off either, even with their biggest rattle gun, and eventually had to cut them off, then I asked them to replace all the nuts and studs or I would complain to our state motoring association (a black mark there could lose them a "preferred repairer status") to their credit they did, and gave me a nice new set of mag wheel locking nuts, and they looked up the person who had done the job. I do wonder if he kept his job.

That happened on my old f150. The shop techs tightened the lugs down so much I couldn’t get them off. I tried every trick in the book but nothing worked, ended up stripping all of them out. Every single lug on every wheel… I had to drill out the studs and replace them all with new hardware. Never took my truck back to that shop lol

Hearing these stories is the exact reason I never let other people touch my shit (If I can help it).

When I first got my new wheels I took them to an old school tire shop I have near me. It's a first come first serve type system, you pull up under the car port right in front of the door then hop out and go inside. I dropped them off and came back later to pick them up. I went inside to pay and by the time I came back out two kids with impacts and jack stands were about to go crazy 😆. I had to tell them to chill out and just help me load em up.

I’m the same way. That’s where the saying comes from “If you want something done right, do it yourself!” lol the only time I’ll take my truck in for work is if the repairs are something I can’t do myself or if it’s warranty work that I’m not paying for. Even then, I check what was done and make sure it’s right. Can’t trust anyone these days!

This is over torqued…… it is a 9/16” or 14 mm bolt. I think the original torque was suppose to be 125 and we took it to about 215 and it broke. I glued it back together so it would look prettier. Notice how far it stretched before it broke.

Well, in fairness, it does have a certain Mach I vibe to it, which is always welcome.

IMG_0834.webp
Duke, you're right about it having a Mach 1 vibe to it. From what I remember reading in Dads old Hot Rod magazines is that the Falcon XB cars are the Australian equivalent to the Ford Mustang. @Cmar can correct me if I'm wrong lol.🙂
