I went fishing. Came back to the truck 20 minutes later and black smoke was rolling out of the cracked open driver's window.

I ended up driving it home but I have all kinds of errors and warnings. Can you explain why or tell me what to look at?

The fire burnt through the center console and melted the wire harness on the floor.

First error is pre collision will not work. Air bag warning light. Stability system malfunction. Rear seat belt restraint system malfunction.

I tried to remove the burnt wires by splicing them to cut out the melted/bare wires.

The air bags look like they're in good shape but I'm worried about the one above the driver door. It got really hot. Is there something in that air bag that could send a code?

The front camera looks good but I'm sure it got hot also. Cleaned it and reinstalled.

Wow!

Good thing you weren't injured and had come back to your truck 20 minutes later. Or maybe it would've been better to let it burn and get a new one because it looks like a lot of damage there. Were there any aftermarket mods, dash cam or lights that could've caused this?

I did put a radio in..... But it still works. Lol.
I think it was the battery pack in a purse sitting on the console. But not sure

You have a real difficult job ahead of you. I once rewired a burned wiring harness in a Volvo Truck Tractor by replacing and splicing one wire at a time. It was a pain and took a week. Good luck.

I was going to ask if a lithium battery was involved…

Good to hear that you are okay. I'm sorry that your truck got burned. Here's to hoping that you can get it repaired.

If you're going to fix this yourself.

First repair all the wiring damage. Disconnect the battery before starting and inspect every single wire that is scorched. Replace any sections that are bare. I might go so far as to just replace all of the wires in the section that took damage. (or replace the harness(es)).

Once you get all that done, then start with the code scanner and see if there are any modules reporting errors or not functioning at all.

Most of those codes are due to the RCM - Restraint Control Module wiring being damaged - In the posted pic
This will need an in depth investigation into the complete wiring circuits, as shorted wiring may have damaged other connectors on the circuits as well as the modules.

It may be easier to replace the complete harness assembly, it will take some digging to find part numbers for all that are damaged but it’s going to be the best and safest option.

Wow. I’m glad you guys weren’t in the truck when that happened! Honestly I figured for a lithium battery explosion/fire it would be everywhere. I can’t believe the seats didn’t catch. Good luck on the wiring, maybe insurance could pay for the harness and you do the labor if you want to do it yourself?

I would try a local scrapyard and hope they have one you can pick from , usually they are totalled front or rear and the interior is fine, you could swap most of the melty(and smokey) stuff ...

The damage at least in the pic is Harness # 14A005
P/N: KB3Z-14A005- (?)
This will need a VIN cross reference for the (-)

Its hard to see exactly what wires are damaged in the pics, you may (should) also have some blown fuses - BUT repair the wiring before replacing any fuse (or you may set the airbags off)

You may get lucky by just repairing wiring but it will need a deep check of the complete circuit as the truck has been powered up with damaged wires, its unknown of somewhere else in the circuit did not take heat damage.

You also want to be careful and disable the Airbags before touching anything, fuse may already be blown, but to ensure the system is deenergized perform the following, note the BECMB module has the ability to provide power even with key off under certain conditions.

The purpose of the below is to ensure you do not have a short providing power to the circuit even with the fuses pulled.

SRS Fault Present

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  1. Remove the RCM fuse or if equipped, BECMB fuse(s). Refer to Wiring Diagram Cell 11/Section 700-01 for fuse and relay information.
Edit: NOTE: BECMB = BCM (Fuse Panel - Fuse 14 & 19)
  1. For a vehicle equipped with a 3 blade BECMB / GWM fuse, install a 2 blade 10A fuse at the GWM position to allow the scan tool to communicate with the vehicle network.
  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  1. Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out a Network Test. Verify that the RCM and, if equipped, BECMB does not respond to the Network Test. If the RCM or BECMB pass the Network Test, remove the correct RCM or BECMB fuse and repeat the Network Test to verify before proceeding.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  1. Disconnect the battery.
Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).
  1. Wait at least one minute before continuing vehicle service.
